New Big Bore-500 MDM

BiebsNew Big Bore-500 MDM
I hooked up with Michael458 and ordered a 500 MDM in the last few days. Although the smaller (shorter) rounds are intriguing, I went with the all-out monster, on a full-length RUM case and a .510 bullet. Should make a great walking Cape Buff rifle. Michael had the M70 CRF RUM action in-house, and Wes at Accurate Innovations picked me out a great stock of dark, dense English walnut. The full-length aluminum bedding block used on the 500 MDM builds will keep it from splitting from the energies created by this powerhouse. Stay tuned! :-)

capowardThe 500 MDM uses a .500 caliber bullet, not .510 caliber.

Definitely big enough. Just didn't want you laying in a supply of .510s that wouldn't be able to use.

Paul TruccoloBeibs, welcome to the B&M line of cartridges.
As you acknowledged there are many fine rounds in the B&M family, but the biggest, in my opinion, is the best !
I have now been using a .500 MDM as my primary back-up gun for the past several seasons and have nothing but praise for it.
Not only the cartridge but, as Mike would phrase it, the platform/cartridge combination.
The stocks, as provided by Accurate Innovations are extremely practical, functional, and a dream to carry on the hot trail of a buffalo hunt.
The cartridge itself, for specific use on buffalo (I have not used it on Elephant) is nothing short of stunning.
It is quite simple to get the 450gn Safari Raptor at 2400 f.p.s from my 20" tube and the effects of that bullet at that velocity placed near a vital zone on a buffalo needs to be seen to be appreciated.
The more you use it the more you'll love it.
Congrats again.
Paul.

brent ebelingBiebs,
Along with Paul I find this rifle a fantastic weapon. It is a joy to carry with a 19" or even 20" barrel. I found it to have a better felt recoil than that 416 banser you bought from me a couple of years ago. Actually that money went to fund my 500 MDM!!!
I shot a 500 solid CEB at a charging cow ele this past september. Went in directly below the brain
25 March 2014, 23:08
BiebsYes, I expect it will be a great hunting companion.
26 March 2014, 01:31
pagosawingnutAll right. How much do you want for it? I know when you post something it is usually for sale.

Yeah Pagosa, I could not believe it either! So I have him under contract stating that he HAS TO KEEP THE RIFLE
for a FULL 30 Days. Then when he SELLS, he is under contract to ME and has to sell it back at a 10% discount UNDER original
cost as a "ReStocking" fee! HEH HEH HEH........................
Biebs is doing it right I must say. Talked to Wes yesterday, has a fantastic stick of wood, very dark English, with some nice
black mineral streaks in it, I can't wait to see it!
Winchester M70 RUM action, 20 inch barrel, matte black gunkote, NECG front barrel band, rear adjustable.... Standard MDM specs
Look out buffalo, run that 450 #13 NonCon, 2400 fps or so, turns buffalo inside out and then some........

pagosawingnutYeah, Michael. Good luck with that. Hell, he'll have the trail of some other new, pretty, fancy doo-dad before he ever gets it or shoots it.

27 March 2014, 02:21
D R HunterI'd have thought Michael would mandate an 18" bbl.

I suppose the 20 incher will "cut it" though...

No doubt it will be a rifle worth waiting for, and a super
stopper of ALL game! Enjoy it my friend.

I'm going to slip blanks in your rifle on our Zim Buff hunt. We'll see how fast you can run :-)

LionHunterBiebs,
You have a PM reply; and welcome to the B&M club. I have found nothing to dislike about the platform/caliber combination of my 458B&M, nor have two of my hunting companions who have also chosen the 458B&M.

Hell, I'll be alright as long as I can find a switch, or maybe a big stick.

michael458Rick... Big as you are, you should be ashamed to carry a gun for buffalo anyway, just wrestle one to the ground, poke his eyes out, kick 'em in the nuts, beat hell out of him..... HEH HEH.......

pagosawingnutThat's funny right there. You're almost as tall as I am, not near as good looking but almost as tall. To grab onto my belt, you'd have to jump down and the visual of that, to me at least, is disturbing.

28 March 2014, 15:57
michael458Pagosa.... Biebs is a midget next to you! LOL........
Wes sent some photos of Biebs roughed in stock yesterday.... It looks pretty spiffy, even in the rough! I am just a little pissed, as I think it is going to turn out far better than my english on one of my 500s.....

Rick, if you added 50-60 lbs of upper body muscle, we could be twins! :-)
29 March 2014, 05:06
pagosawingnutJon,
Don't need it. I can carry a scotch/rocks all the way to the fire. And, hold up my .500 NE quite well without assistance.

29 March 2014, 05:07
pagosawingnutCrap, Jon, If I added 50-60lbs of upper body muscle, then my shirts wouldn't fit anyway!

30 March 2014, 09:57
Idaho Sharpshootercompared to table muscle, upper body muscle is highly overrated, especially at Bieb's age...
30 March 2014, 21:58
pagosawingnutPlus, it has to be hard to suck your table muscle in for that long.

michael458Looks like we are adding yet another Family Member, Tanks, here on AR, has decided to build his Dangerous Game rifle, a new 500 MDM. Little different than any 500 done thus far however..... Tanks needs a LEFTY. Just so happens I ordered some time ago a Left Hand Montana RUM action, and while I was doing it, a right hand as well. Montana is close enough to be called a Winchester, so this satisfied me on that count. We have never worked with a Montana, but to me, it looks good, and I can see no reason it should not do well, so it will be off to SSK to get started within the week.
Tanks has been in Touch with SSK and sorted out some of his specs he wanted, and has been in touch with Accurate Innovations as well and has his blank picked out for the project, and it looks like a very nice stick of Bastogne........ Looks like this is going to turn out very nice..........
Biebs 500 is under way as well, excellent start now on the metal and the wood........
Welcome to the Family Tanks......... I think you will be pleased with the end result.............

Paul TruccoloWhoa, there's a sudden rush on.500 MDM's
and I thought they were supposed to be "exclusive".
Seriously though, welcome to the .50 cal club and the B&M family Tanks
02 April 2014, 21:36
tanksThanks.
The work Michael has done on this cartridge, and especially his helpfulness made it a no brainer. It overcame my initial reluctance to go for a wildcat cartridge.
Just placed my order with Accurate Innovations for the stock. Already sourced enough IMR 8208 (recommended for this cartridge) to last me a while as well.
Now comes the hard part. Waiting

.
02 April 2014, 22:08
brent ebelingAlright Michael, it is getting crowded her now. Let's do a 577MDM!!!!

HEH..... People have told me I was being a little selfish, and picky about who I let have one of the 500 MDMs......
Look at poor Biebs, it took him two years of begging before I yielded...... HEH HEH.......
Brent, everything else gets bigger and heavier..... Whew....... and I am getting....

Tanks rifle is going to be a first, and a little unique being a lefty....... It is going to be interesting...... And yes, the waiting is a pain I know. But, look too, I had the left hand action, if not for that, would have probably been 6 months for that alone...... And I don't have any other left hand ones that size......
Biebs rifle standard right hand and all is in the works. We are striving to have it in my hands by June 1.... I give it a work out, make 100% sure all is good to go, and hopefully Biebs will be taking it on his buffalo hunt end of June or so....
Paul will be putting his gun to work again shortly as well, Andrew's 500 is seeing a lot of service in Zimbabwe the last couple of years now...... Heath's rifle is still here with me, he is trying to sort out getting it in his hands for this years Zimbabwe season as well.......
I have to get my ass in gear with the 500 B&M, (2.5 inch Version) get it ready for June as well....
We have to get some terminals in for the few new solids I had done, we can run the new 525 #13 at 2300 in the MDM, and would like to test that one.......
