HI all, I finally broke down and picked up a copy of quickload. I tried to save some money and get Load Tech, but it's a piece.... I was looking at different powders in the 470NE. It looked like the peak pressure would drop by going to RL22 instead of RL15. Would the increase in recoil be that much of a difference? The RL22 would give near 100% load density.

Lar45-I've found Quickload tends to overestimate velocities and minimize pressures. It's a good starting place, but in a 470 NE the safest powder seems to be Rl-!5 even though you need a filler. I'm just a bit leary of Rl-22 in that case. Too many reports of folks blowing up/wrecking their fine doubles for me to want to experiment too much with the 470NE case.-Rob

Rob, I've found that ql DOES over estimate velocity but it does by also OVER estimating pressure. I have emailed the programmer over a couple powders, especialy winchester's being WAY too "hot" in the software... it said that the winchester suggested loads for 748 in a 358 with 200 grains was 72kpsi... these loads had been pressure tested BY winchester.

here's my thoughts on OL.. it over estimates velocity as a function of pressure.. but it beats the heck out of guessing

I've just gotten Quick Load, so I haven't played with it a bunch, but I did run my 30-06 load through it. A Rem 165 pspcl and 60gns of RL22. I get 2730fps avg, and it predicted 2733fps. I have to see how it does with my other guns and loads.

Butch Searcy likes H and IMr-4831...I have used it a lot, with about 108 grs. Never had any problems and I know a lot of folks that have....

Rl-15 is another good choice, but there is a camp that sez fillers blow up guns and ring chambers...

who do you believe?, who knows....

I will continue to use 4831 and RL 15 whichever shoots the best...in both english rifles and Searcy rifles...

Searcy rifles won't make any difference as they are modern steel and much stronger. you can use any powder and even shoot monolithic bullets.

Ray, what velocity did you get with the 108gns? I'm assuming no filler on that load? 24" bbl?

My chronoed results with RL15 and 10gns Dacron came within 50fps of quickload. The 500gn cast bullets did go about 100fps faster than the barnes XLCs.

I compared quickload with the 470 data on AR's reloading page and they were within 30fps. FWIW

I ran a few different powders through to see what it might give.
RL-15 91gns 2152fps 39.8kpsi 80% load density

My barrels are from Pac-Nor, but the action isn't new though.
After reading the Seyfried article that Rusty sent me, I've deleted all the slow powder references. I have 3 cans of RL15, I'll just work with those. The article says that Federal uses RL15 in the 470, but do they use a filler also?

you would have to ask Butch that question. I have not chronographed..that is his regulation load on most .470 rifles.. you can go up or down to tune them up I am sure...Velocity is not important in a double but POI and group size are..there is only one spot for each double rifle loadwise....

The filler and ringing the chamber was with black powder loads. There is no such problem with RL-15 and poly filler

RL-15 and poly filler is still safe and the best thing to use in Nitro Express. Especially in older doubles. Velocities are very consistant with RL-15 and poly filler.

I believe that, but lots of "experts" are telling me that ringed chambers happen with smokeless, particularly IMR-3031, but as you know rumor and inuendo flourish in the world of the double gun...

I still believe its perfectly OK to shoot 4831 in an English double, been doing it for years and I firmly believe the problems came from poor loading technique as opposed to the powder selection...
