Does anyone know the restrictions on bringing an over 50 caliber hunting rifle to Africa from the US? It appears that from what I've read thus far it is not legal. People hunt with the various over 50 caliber doubles every year so I must be missing something. T. Carr's post on the "Hunting Reports-Africa" forum states an individual can travel with no more than 3 firearms of 50 caliber or under.

I hope to use the 60O OK in August and want to hash out the details of bringing it to RSA well before then. If it matters the rifle is a bolt not a double.

I believe sporting arms and cartridges are exempted, but contact U.S. Customs Service, and the U.S. State Dept. for further information.

In my experience, U.S. Customs only checks the serial number of the gun against what's recorded on their Form 4457 when you register, and I've NEVER had them check my guns on the way back (four safaris, plus a few trips to Europe).

Fritz454- I've hunted in Botswanna and RSA with 50 Caliber sporting rifles and no problems with customs or import/export. Only in Tanz did they ever even bother checking headstamps on cartridges. I asked Paul Zorn about this in Zim and he says no problems.-Rob
