404 AR?
Rokay, Guys...

The 404 seems like an awsome round.. BUT there's just too much disagreement on bore...

So,
Let's get a 404, with a .416 bore, load 400s at 2200, and call it the 404AR?

Or the 416 Howell, a shortened standard length round based on the 404Jeff, 416 bullet. This round is capable of 300gn at 2650fps & 400gn at 2450fps. The very similar 404 Dakota would be a good choice for a standard length 423 diameter.

While it may be heresy, IMHO the only thing I like about the 404 Jeff is the bore size of .423. This increase in frontal area certainly helps a round which basically duplicates the ballistics of a 450-400 and which will run through a bolt action. If you drop to a .416 bore size, and wanted a compact round that would feed through a Mauser, then I'd just go with a .416 Taylor or .416 Dakota.-Rob

You are not the first to think soo, but since most bullets are 423, you have to make sure you barrel matches the most common bullet diameter and then you are ready [Big Grin]

It would be neat to blow out the case and straighten it out a bit, but it's really not needed. How about a 404 Jeffery ack imp? [Eek!] [Razz]

I like it the way it is. There really isn't that much confusion about bore/bullet size. It's .423 & that is what most bbl. makers use. I've never even seen .418 dia. bullets for sale. Good bullets are available from Woodleigh, Barnes & Northfork. Rumor has it Swift is coming out w/ a 400gr also. I can't wait until mine is finished. [Big Grin]

Fred,

How is your .404J coming?

Unfortunately the .404 is a wildcat in the USA because some gunsmiths feel free to build them as they want, not to follow standards. Not so in Europe. Even Lothar Walther will ask you if you want a .418" or .423" barrel if you order a ".404 barrel".

When I ordered my Lothar barrel he just ask ".423, right?" It was delivered on time and at a resonable price!
