450 No2 double at the deer lease
I thought I might better shoot my 450 No2 a few times as I am taking it to Zim in March so I took it to the deer lease this weekend.
I was also testing some loads with North Fork 450 grain cup point solids.
I went out walking around hoping i could sneak up on a coyote, a big turtle or maybe a turkey as my freezer is full.
I saw some turkeys and as the rifle was loaded with 350 gr Hornady RN, I placed a NF CPS in the right bbl.
As I got close enough for the shot I realized they were all small jakes and small hens. So I removed the solid and replaced it with a 350 Hornady. Just then I saw a squirrel run up a tree about 15 or 16 yards away. As I raised the rifle the squirrel went around the oth back side of the tree. He then peeked around the side of the tree. There was another big tree right behind him so I aimed and fired. The bullet struck him just under the head in the neck. He went right down. Big Grin
He is in the freezer now.
I figure if I can hit a squirrel at @ 15 yards I might be able to hit a buff or elephant out to 20 yards or so. Big Grin

I think a squirrel with a 450 #2 qualifies as enough gun....if only barely.

Wow!

I'm never that lucky.

I missed a charging saber toothed squirrel with my Boss 577, that made him turn and run.

I had to get him with the other barrel. "Texas Heart Shot"

Man! that was a rush. I thought I was a goner for sure.

The rifle was marginal for our big northern red squirrels.

Good luck in the big Z.

Mark - I've never seen a Boss that big. Have you got a pic to post? I bet it's a beautiful rifle.

Me too, except with my .500 NE and that didn't even kill the little bugger at the DRSS hunt!

There wasn't anything left to get a photo of and the smear on the tree was too high.

I got a ground squirrel last weekend with a 7/8 oz saboted slug out of the 12 Ga From Hell at about 4300fps at 50 yrds. Red Mist! Very Satifying!-Rob

Thanks for the comments. Actually there was very little edible meat damage. It did knock out about half of his neck, but the rest of the squirrel was not damaged.

No wonder you are so handy with that rifle. I guess there is a little to the saying:

Actually this is the second squirrel I have taken with my 450 No2. I have killed several deer, wild pigs, armadillos, skunks and at least 2 coyotes. Big Grin
No doubt the more you shoot/hunt with a gun the better you will be with it.

I believe you should shoot and hunt with your big bore DG rifle untill you can handle it like a 22 rimfire.

How 'bout a feral cat with the .577 x 2 3/4 Nitro!

The 650-grain blue-nose Woodleigh turned this feral moggy into a hand-puppet! Had to use a convenient log to disguise the carnage for a photo!

Small game is always challenging practice with big-bores!

There is a famous quote, and I don't know by whom, along the lines of " beware of the man who has only one gun. Most likely, he knows how to shoot it." Shooting small game with your big bore makes sense. I just took delivery today on a RSM in .458 Lott. Topped it with a Leupold 1.25X4 European reticle #4. I hope to pop a few pigs with it before I travel to Tanzania this fall.

It think that quote is bullshit. How about my quote......"Beware of the man who owns many guns. He probably shoots all the time and is a damn good shot."
23 January 2006, 01:34
<Hunter Formerly Known As Texas Hunter>
The message is pretty much the same. I've got a fair number of guns so I can easily subscribe to your quote.

And then there's Teddy Rossevelt's quote " I may not shoot well, but I shoot often". That probably best describes me.

There was a time I only had one gun... I think I was six. I'm pretty sure I'mm a lot better shot now that I've widened the ranks. The guys I know who only own one or two guns hardly shoot more than a few rounds a year, so I have to agree with M16. On the other hand beware the guy who has many guns but still always uses the same one for everything.
