pistol bullet in 475 cal rifles
Has anyone with the various 475 caliber rifles tried to use 475 pistol bullets as a low cost North American hunting round or practice, ala the 35 Whelen? I am thinking about building a 470 capstick on a P17 action and am curious about the possiblities of using the cheap pistol bullets.

I have used both the Speer and Hornady 400 grain pistol bullet in my 470 capstick. The speer feeds but the Hornady does not. Accuracy is about an inch an a half. I have not shot game with them, but I do not think they would be good for anything bigger than deer.

500 Grains,
Thanks for the info, I'll give it a try when I get the rifle built. I've seen feeding problems with the Whelen using pistol bullets but since they aren't for anything dangerous they can be single fed anyway. What kind of velocities are you getting with the Capstick, pistol or rifle bullets, around 2100 to 2200 with rifle bullets?

I also use the Speer 400gr. bullets in my .470 Capstick.

I 'plunk' with them (400gr. bullets don't go 'plink' when they hit stuff [Big Grin] ).

I don't know what velocity I get with the 400's. It's a light load that I got out of a Handloader articlefrom about 1991. I think I have the article in my reloading notebook.

I also do not know exactly what velocity I get with my 500 grainers either. I use 86 grains of IMR 4064, but 88 grains works too and no pressure problems.

Anyone care to share your 400 grain bullet data with us?

Several times I have been tempted to try the 400 grain Hornady but don't have any 470 data.
