new_guySmithson Mounts
Joe Smithson sent me some photos last week of his mounts, their covers and a nifty little peep sight.
As I had not seen such good photos of this setup before, I thought you guys would like to see them too.

Norman ConquestThats some really beautiful machinist work.

Very slick looking setup there. Thanks for posting.
So, the only thing that holds the scope & rings in place under recoil is the ball style detent in the rear mount?

Dave

SnellstromVery very nice! I really like the looks of that set-up and the peep sight. I think I gotta have that, I was just about to send a rifle off to get it CeramaKoted but I would like to have that done first!
I'll be watching this post to get the contact info.
Wow! That is really interesting with a peep to go with it.

Looks like they might be milled into square bridges of a Mauser (first rifle).
The peep is on an add-on base with an M70 it would appear.
I could use that on a magnum Mauser and an M70 for starters.
Thanks for sharing.

WoodjackLook below;
http://www.blackburnmachine.com/338975.htmlI have played with the Smithson set up on a few GMA mausers. They sure are slick looking, but found them a bit fidly when trying to line up both front and rear feet to get them back into the bridges.Es pecially if you have a larger objective scope. taking them off seems ok.
No problems for a general hunting rig.
But if mounting a 1.5-5xLeupold type scope on a BigBore, I would have a claw mount.Very hard to beat.
On a small action lightwieght rig like above, i believe the front ring can be moved forward, maybe so the foot is centered in the reciever ring/bridge,or wherever you like, depending what scope you use. I like to maximise use of tube lengths. Regardless of where you posi the ring,I would have the bridge shortened to match the foot, as we see done on the rear.
I would also like to see the option of a ring without the offset, so as to be able to better match different scope tube and reciever lengths .You can then apply that straight one to front, rear,or both positions.
He also makes similar steel rings that have integral bases for M70,M98. with 8/40 screw holes.(US$400?)
thanks for the photos.
