I ran into a great deal on a Schmidt and Bender illuminated scope at a Cabelas awhile back. It's a 1.5-6X42 with the illuminated cd reticle. It looks new, and it was only $650. The bad news was that I didn't have enough room to mount it on my 416 Rigby, as the scope only has about five inches between the bells, and I need about 5.3 inches since the action is so damned long. The rifle has Talley bases and currently wears a Kahles Helia C in 1.5-6X42.
I called Talley, and they said they do not make any sort of offset ring.
I put the scope away. I recently picked up a new Winchester in 375 H&H, and it looks like I will have the same situation.
Does anyone know of a good detachable mounting system that will allow me to mount this scope on such a long action, and still let me take it off to use the iron sights? It would be a great piece of glass in a leopard blind with the illuminated reticle, but on a dangerous game rifle, I want to be able to take it off.
If I can't mount it on one of my big bores, I just might trade it on one of the new Swaro Z6i 1-6 EE scopes.

Go with Warne bases and rings. Warne makes an extended length front base, I believe up to 0.500 or 0.850 extra. I have both types on my M70s and it helps when mounting the Euro scopes.

The leupold one piece base on M70 might work if you can find one?

For CZ I had the same problem. Not just making the scope fit, but taking advantage of 5 inch eye relief on the scope.

I did not know about the warne base for the CZ550?

I did successfully use the weaver style top rail sold by CZ.That can be seen here:

You have to call and clarify which 550 and get the right part #. You want the 550 magnum base. it is a different part number.

It does work, but I wish they had a neater look and trimmer/lower base.

The above allow me to take full advantage of 5 inch eye relief scope (and make it fit), but it looks a bit odd and the scope is a bit high too.

Why do they make the tubes so short. Leupold seem to make an art form of doing it.

Yes, but you still might want to take advantage of the scope eye relief, some Leupold are over 4.5 inch and Nikon omega a full 5 inch. Nice to have and make use of in a true big kicking big bore. And one might want to experiment with some of the new shotgun dot technology.

I might ask the corollary: Why dont gun manufacturers offer better solutions for versatile scope placement on the long actions?

Or the scope ring/base folks talk with the gun makers to get it planned right up front?

After years of praising Ruger for integrated rings, I find myself more in favor of a clean top with screw holes like the M70 that takes a base. Those M70 options mount lower and cleaner than mickey mouse adaptations for Ruger and CZ.

M70 has a natural placement, that is, about the centre of both receiver rings. Rem 700 generally has the rear ring forward of the base holes and so a little better than M70 for short scopes

I did not mean it that way. I type faster than I think, sorry. I know the longer eye relief scopes like Nikon Omega or the Leupold African(?) have more eye relief built in (quality or engineered). But, to get the benefit it requires mounting the scope forward on the action.

That Leupold has both long eye relief and wide field of view, but what good it that with the scope right in your face same as the $200 model.

But making the tube half inch longer won't stop you mounting the scope fully forward.

Did you talk to Talley about an extension base? Ask for Gary Turner and I'll bet he will have a solution for you. It would save you the cost of new rings and bases.

Yes, I agree. The location of the rear ring limits that movement.
