Winchester Model 70 Classic Magazine Capacity
Anyone know what the magazine capacity of a Winchester Model 70 Classic in 416 Rem should be? We seem to be able to only get two down and one in the tube. If we put three down, it doesn't sit right and jams. Also does anyone make bottom metal that will support 4 down?

Thanks!

Regards,

Chuck

Chuck,

I don't have a .416 M70, but I put a Wisner magazine spring in my .375 and can now get a fourth round down.

That may be enough to give you three down at a low cost.

It's supposed to hold 3+1. Does the third round fit really tight? Duane makes a magazine box for the Model 70 called the XRM. I think it will give you 4+1.

Contact Duane, he designed the box so all the changes are inside the stock. If I every get a M70 it will be the first thing I change.

My standard M70 in 416 Rem takes 3 down and there is still probably 1/8" movement left in the spring. It feeds all 3 rounds like a charm, even the dreaded flat nose solid Smiler

Supposed to be able to put 3 down. So, I'd just get a gunsmith to adjust it rather than replacing the magazine. Of course, replacing might be cheaper Wink.

Mine holds 3 down. Most have a mag spring that has a loop that points up about 3/8 inch on the bottom where it attaches to the floor plate. If you replace the spring with the one that is for standard cartridges, with out the loop, you get a little extra room for 3 down. It still will not take 4 down with a 416 RM.

Chuck,

First open the floor plate and see if there is something obvious keeping the spring for compressing fully. It almost sounds like your cartridges might be too long for the magazine.

Thanks all, I'll look at it. I'm planning to send it to Duane Weibe for some new bottom metal that will take 4 down as soon as my son is done elk hunting with it this year. It's taken a little work, but in the end I think my son will have an awesome brown bear and African dangerous game rifle.

Tag. Really good info here if I decide to upgrade my M70 Safari Express in .375.

Get one of Bill Wiseman's rifles in .416 RM and it holds 4 down 1 up AND gives you a detachable magazine so you can reload quickly and change from softs to solids easily.

I've used mine for everything from elephant to duikers with no complaints.

Now for some of you, this would be sacrilege because it's a push feed, but I've never had a feeding problem on the range or in the field (other than the time I short-stroked it, but that would have happened regardless) and that's a lot of rounds.
