Browning 458 win
Browning 458 win
I just bought a Belgium Browning 458 win that was advertised as having a Mauser action. The action does not have a claw extractor but a extractor that looks like a Sako. Is this a Mauser variation or something else.

GeorgeSWell, Mauser has made push-feeds (the Model 99), but usually, a 'Belgium Browning bolt-action' was built on an FN Mauser action, which was CRF.
Post a photo or three.

dean119They were made from commercial FN mauser actions and then later Sako actions. Sounds like you have a later one. Both are good, but the FNs are better.

driverHello,
Had one of the Browning's as you describe while in Alaska and it was a fine rifle. Barrel a bit on the light side for me, stepped, looked like a .410 Shotgun Barrel at the muzzle and yes, the action was what appeared to be a commercial Mauser, streamlined bolt shroud, sans claw extractor, Sako style extractor, nice piece of walnut and neat adjustable rear sight.
It served as a back up rifle, not much use due to it's very nice "shiny" finish. Kind of miss it like so many I have let go over the decades.

GAHUNTERAs dean 119 said, the Browing Safaris were made by both FN and Sako. The FN is a true Mauser CRF and the Sako a push feed. (Albeit a good push feed.)
When I was shopping on the internet to buy one in .375 H&H, I had to specifically ask if it was a long extractor model (FN Mauser) or a short extractor model (Sako). Usually, I could tell by the asking price, with the FNs going for about 25-percent more. I finally found a beautiful FN Browning on Guns America with a custom stock, unfired other than test firing, for $1500.
"458 Winchester Magnum caliber, with the Mauser action. Last 3 on seriel number is L71, 24" barrel, factory recoil pad, front and rear sights. Slight bluing wear, minor rubs and dings in wood..."
This is a copy of the advertisement that when with the rifle. He specificaly says it's a mauser action.

MKane160Dr. B:
It IS a Mauser action. FN made both long extractor (CRF) and short extractor (pushfeed) Mauser actions for the Safaris. Sako also made actions, but, I believe, they were made just for the smaller calibers. I have this exact same rifle in .458 WM.

You can always make more money, you can never make more time...........LLYWD. Have you signed your donor card yet?
I've got one on the way, should be here today. Its the long extractor. Is the box going to be 3.34 or 3.60?

AtkinsonBrownings FNs were made with both short and long extractors, yours is a short extractor. The long extractor Browning FNs bring a premium price to collectors and hunters.
