Sur5erLott
Hi I am going to turn one of my Interarms 458 Win Mag into a Lott. My Questions are.
1.Any problem with this action handeling the Lott Both in size, Or strength??
2.What size should the chamber be reamed out to??
458 Lott size Or the 450 Watts size.
2.80" or 2.85" or suggestions?
Thanks Sur5er

AfricanHunterI would run it to Watts length.

maddenwh2.85 if I remember correctly. Double check on that as it's been a while...

Indlovui recently had the same conversion done. go for 2.85. You will also have to have the magazine box lengthened to 3.6' for the Lott.

MADDOGI know somebody with a Lott..On this action.
Seams to be no problem. However I would be interested in other opinions.... Is this a good action for the Lott?? Is streanth a issue?
Indlovu : Was your's a Interarms?

WhitworthStrength is not an issue. I am having my .458 win mag Mark X converted to .450 Ackley as we speak (it's in gunsmith prison right now -- hell it might even be done......).

450 ackley rocks

Mine is on an enfield, great cartridge - 450 Lott is also a good one.
If I were to build again, I would go with a lott as it is a factory chambering and would probably be easier to sell (although why ?)

Sur5erDo I understand correctly when I hear you can shoot the 458 Lott in the 450 Watts chamber??
But not the other way around...

That's correct. The Watts is just a hair longer than the Lott.

WhitworthMy original stock (Mark X .458 win mag) broke at the wrist before I even managed to drop it off at my gunsmith for the conversion.......
Got a bunch of 550 grain Woodleigh loads from Superior for it.......

.............What , do you want to break another stock ????What are you going to use 550 gr bullets in a full length 458.....Try some 350 gr TSX ,,, you will like them ... they do 2700 fps plus real well , kill like lightning , make actually hitting your target alot easier and don,t break stocks .........They save money for you too ,, you don,t have to go to the chiropractor after shooting ...
.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Whitworthgumboot -- I like heavy for caliber bullets. The Ackley will get 2400 fps with a 500 grain bullet. I would use a 450 grain bullet in a Lott/win mag/Ackley before a 350.......but that's just me. I have lighter calibers for reaching out and touching game. The Ackley is for getting up close, personal, and administering death on large animals that bite back!

The stock wouldn't have broken had it been bedded and pinned, but it never made it. That's okay because I am buying a nicer stock for it......

gumboot458............Ya ,., what ever turns your crank ,,..I just think they are like shooting an 8 bore and they probably don,t kill any better than a 400 or 450 ......What is the load that gives you a full 2400 fps with the Ackley ,,,, ???????

AtkinsonI would opt for the African 3" version of the Lott..and you can shoot .458 win or .458 Lotts of any length in it...Its the best of all worlds and also the most powerfull, but best of all you can shoot it at reasonable velocity at very low pressures.

PeglegAfrican 3
Is that the Hoffman or Watts chambering so the Hoffman / Watts, Lott, and Win Mag can be shot out of the same gun?
The only easy day is yesterday!
08 February 2008, 02:50
maddenwhThe 3' is just reaming it out to 3' instead of 2.85 in.... or so it would seem. Ray...?

RIPWant a .458 Belted 3"?
Just use a banded or grooved or multicannelured bullet and seat the Lott or Watts out an extra .15" or .2" in a CZ 550 Magnum that already has a 3.85" box.
Simple.
The standard .458 Lott chamber has the same long funnel throat as the .458 WinMag.
Long-nosed .458 Lott in 3.85" box = .458 Belted 3"
But not a good idea for a Mk X.
Do not butcher the Mk X .458WinMag.
Leave it standard length with 3.4" box and be the first kid on your block to have a .458/.375 Ruger: .458 Ruger
That would really be slick.
Shoulder is better than that of a 10.75x68mm.
The .458 Ruger should be very close to .458 Lott ballistics.

Idaho SharpshooterI side with RIP here, although I did convert one of my Whitworths from 458WM to Lott three years ago. Worked great and was a 3+1. Just get the 375 Box and follower and go happy.

AtkinsonJust a 3" Lott, its popular in Africa...
I don't see why the Mark X won't work..I know your reasoning and that is you must take metal off the feed ramp and theoretically that is a no no, but that has not been the case according to the folks that build them. Open them up as much as possible in the rear and as little in front as you can and they seem to work, I have not heard of a failure, not even one..I have been told its the better steel that we use today perhaps..I know the Mark X works great with the std. 2.85 Lott..You would only have to remove about .150 off the lip, right?
