Length of 400 grain X bullet
I'm trying to get some X bullets loaded for my Work this year. I leave in a couple weeks and I was going to load some 400 grain X bullets for the .458 Lott to try out. The 500 X bullets are too long for the case capacity as they take up too much powder space. The 400's being shorter might work better. Does anyone know how long they are? I hope no longer then a standard construction Jacketed lead 500 grain bullet.

Jim,

I do not have any of these here, but I think they will be longer than a normal jacketted bullet.

JJ, My Friend,
IMHO, the 400's are too far in the wrong direction in regard to both weight and "SD" (.272). The 450 "X" is as long or longer than non-mono 500 gr. softs and the "SD" is same as the 300 grain .375. It is just right for the Lott. You'll get 2,400 fps easy.

Thanks Nick, looks like the 450's are special order from everyplace I look. Gotta find some to try out with more effort, then the couple I had here to play with.

Saeed, thanks for the reply. Good luck with Peter you will have the usual good time and lots of shooting. I'll be seeing Beverly too when I'm there in a couple weeks. jj

Jim my friend,

Please give them all our best regards, and tell them we are counting the days to get there.

I am sure you will give Chris and Don a great hunt. We will look forward to seeing many pictures and hearing many stories.

Good luck to you all.

JJ how many of those 450 grain Barnes bullets do you want?

I have access to a bunch that a friend bought for his .458 mag. The guy decided against making it into a LOTT like you have, because of the recoil he said. Let me know and I will get back to you.

how many has he got and how much does he want?

It seems there is never enough time to do things right, but always enough time to do them over

The 400 gr X is 34 mm, exact the same as the 500 gr Hornady soft. It is a good light load for antelopes in the lott up to 230 yards.

JJ he has at least 3 boxes of Barnes 450 X bullets, possible 4th box somewhere.

There are only 20 bullets in each box.

He said quote "I want retail store price and he pays shipping" this is the price he paid for them he said.

I was under the impression from your post he wanted to get rid of them. Retail price is easy at any gunshop without postage! I suppose he will keep them to enjoy on his shelf.

I guess I should not have told him that it was a professional hunter that wanted them. He saw dollar signs in his eyes perhaps, who knows sorry JJ.
