I like some of the ideas brought out to beef up the constantly centred system but think they would be even more useful locating a simple, etched graticule instead of the whole erector set, which must weigh at least 10 times as much. I even worry about internal windage in either system. It doubles the complexity and adds a screw to possibly rub past twice at each shot. Putting windage into the mounts is hardly rocket science and German and Austrian makers were happy to leave it there for decades.

Using reticle-movement mechanisms such as this or, even better, a system evolved from the old B&L Custom scopes and mounts, I can see the possibility of optical sights even more secure than iron sights, which can be vulnerable out on the end of your barrel and sitting on unsupported cross arms.

Ray, I have an old NRA American Rifleman that came out after Win introduced the 458 and they sent factory ammo to the HP White test lab to be chronographed and they reported it did reach velocities a little better than 2150 fps.

I think the issues were somewhere between what Jim Carmichael found, that the factory equipment was not very consistent and was underloading some rounds --- and maybe the fact that old ammo that had been sitting in the African sun might have degraded.

But with current powders like AA 2230 it is no problem getting 2200 fps with no compression . And Jack Lott wrote on numerous times that all he wanted was a 500 gr bullet at an honest 2150fps
