458 purchase?
A friend has offered me a whitworth in 458, excellent condition, for $750. I already have one I converted to a LOTT. is this too good a deal to let pass?

Whitworth
In my opinion, yes -- jump on it. thumb The price is right.

Go for it and get an exotic chambering like the .458 African Express. It will be a simple re-chambering and then a little bolt face and feed lips and ramp work, if the advertizing is correct. Is it a "standard" length action? If so then the .458 AE is even more interesting.

Gumboot458, the "458 AFRICAN EXPRESS" referes to the Whitworth rifle it's self, not the nomenclature of the cartridge! The chambering is 458 Win Mag!

Interarms imported both a standard line, and the Whitworth line. Both made on the Zastava action, which is a FN Mauser clone, actually made on FN equipment, bought from FN. The large chamerings in the standard line was called the ALASKAN, and was of lesser quality, while the Whitworth rifles were called the African Express rifles, and the fit and finish was much better.

The AFRICAN EXPRESS rifles were fitted with a very classic Express stock, and had Island express sights, the front sling swivle was on the barrel, and Hooded front sight! 375 H&H, and 458 Win Mag.

Indlovu, if you don't want it, PM me with the info, I'll buy it ina heartbeat!

The .458AE that Wink refers to is a South African Cartridge developed from a shortened and neck up .404Jeff.

The case was shortened to 2.6"/67 mm (I might be a bit off, bad memory, but its almost exactly same length as a .300WM). Anyway, it fits neatly into a std length action like the Mauser 98 (or his FN inspired Whitworth), with no loss in mag capacity and no need to lengthen.
It is capable of .458Lott ballistics from a shorter case that is slimmer that a .460Short A2 and keeps pressures below 62 000psi.

Its esentially a shorter .460 G&A. Another smilar African cartride is Alan Vincent's .450Vincent Short. there are other on the .404case too.

It is often confused with the .458 3", nother South African baby but its simply an extended Win Mag/ Lott case to 3"
