Paul HClaro for a biggn stock?
A buddy gave me a 1/4 sawn claro stock, pre-inletted for a 98 mauser. I was going to put it on the whelen mauser, but got to thinking, it might be a better match with the 458 mauser John Ricks is building me.
The grain on the stock is straight through the grip, and I plan to put a secondary recoil lug on the barrel. So, is claro decent walnut for a thumper stock, or shoould it be relegated to medium bores?

500grainsClaro is soft, and therefore weak compared to English or Turkish. But if properly bedded it would probably hold up for a 458 Win. Mag, but I would not use it for a lott.

<J Brown>500 is correct, claro is weak.
Atkinson calls it Californian cork wood.

AtkinsonI would use French, Turkish, Australian, or some European walnut....I don't even recommend California English for the most part, on the real big bores.
