.416 North Fork Recovered from Brown Bear (pics)
Gents,

Here's a picture of the 370gr North Fork bullet I recovered from the brown bear I shot last week. My shot was strictly an 'insurance' round, after my buddy shot the bear with a 338 Win Mag.

 -

The rifle was my 416 Taylor and this loads chronos around 2350fps. Distance was 100 yards. The bullet hit in the right chest area, and was recovered just under the hide on the left side. The bullet weighs 340 grains now.

Compare this to the same exact bullet/rifle combo I used this spring on my black bear...
 -

In both cases, while the bullet did not exit, each bear dropped like a rock upon being hit. Not a single step more. Performance on actual game in these two instances has been flawless.

I'll be out hunting for my own brown bear the next few weeks (as I get time) and I hope to repeat this excercise! [Wink]

That is excellent bullet performance, I would bet the woodleigh 340 gr protected points and the woodleigh 410 gr SN's would also give similar results on bear, have you tried the woodleigh's yet ??

Kev,

I should be calling Mike soon, I'll ask him about the B.C. info.

Which .416 cartridge are you building?

BW -- I am shooting the North Fork bullets now almost exclusively. I shoot the 370 gr. in my .416 Rem, hoping to use it on a Cape Buffalo someday. I also shoot the 225, 250, and a 270 gr. North Fork through my .358 STA. Also 225, 240, and 250 grainers through my .340. As to Sectional Density, Mike explained to me he wanted to build a bullet in each dangerous game type that would have a S.D. of over 3, to achieve that killing penetration on the mean critters. [Eek!] Good shooting.

I recovered 6 370 gr. North Forks from Kudu, Buffalo, Impala, Eland..shot at about 2350 FPS from my 416 Rem...

All looked just like little toadstools, they perform with boring regularity...Perfect for herd shooting Buffalo and Mike tells me I was shooting them too slow and that I can run them out about 2500 FPS or so and get complete penitration with the same results...I intend to do that on a bison and elk very soon.

I would post them for you but I have not the know how and I have a new printer that I can't operate as yet...I can send email photos but can't post them here. Same for my african photos. OH well its not important.
