Cast .416 cal bullets
I was wondering if anyone here cast their own .416 cal bullets? I was thinking of getting a mould so I could make light practice loads for my Taylor, but don't want to sink the money into a mould and sizer if my barrel won't shoot them. I wanted to know if I could buy 30-50 from someone here so I can try them first. Thanks.

NBHunter,
I cast for 416, 458, 475 and 510. My 416 mold is for a spire point 420 grain bullet which may be a little long for your Taylor. I would recomend a round nose bullet mold and a weight of 385 to 400 grains. My mold is an LBT mold and by using wheel weight lead and quenching the bullets in water they end up around 22 on the Brinell scale which is pretty hard. With the LBT lube and a gas check you can drive them as fast as your Taylor is able without a problem. The initial driving band on the LBT mold is very wide so they engrave in the rifling very well. If you would like I'll cast you up some next time I'm doing a batch and you can try them. As long as you pick up the shipping cost I'll send you some to try. Just send me an e-mail.
Take care

NBHunter:
I had excellent results using the RCBS .416 gas checked bullet out of a Ruger No. 1 in .416 Rigby. I got a stash from a friend, so I can't cast you up a batch. But this is about a 365-grain bullet as I recall, and it gave close to 1-inch groups at about 2000 fps out of the Rigby with Norma cases and XMP5744. You can get some of these bullets from Huntingtons.com, but they don't have the gas check on them.
