The 500/450#1 Express was never used in Africa, for dangerous game, and is certainly not a dangerous game cartridge! It is a deer cartridge used in double rifles for the red deer hunting in Scottland,Irland, and England. It did see some use in INDIA, on things like Chital.
The cartridge is just about on parr with the old trapdoor loadings of 45-70 gov, and used only a 300 gr paper patched lead bullet, in front of 105 grs black powder, and in the huge case volume, it only made about 1500 FPS.from 28" barrels. A real air scorcher, I must say!
I have a beautiful Westley Richards, hammerless double rifle, so chambered. It is a selective ejector rifle, with full coverage English scroll engraveing, with 28" barrels, and Mettford rifleing. It was sold out of the London store in 1892, to an unknown customer.It is housed in it's leather&Oak fitted luggage case, with trade lable. It is a beautifully ballanced rifle, and is a joy to carry and shoot, but it is not a DGR, by any definition. Of course if you want to take on Buffalo with one, I'd be happy the sell this rifle to you, at an exorbinant price!
It is fine on deer size game, but I certainly would not take on any of the "BITE BACKS" with it, unless I had absolutely no other choice! The recoil with full loads, is on Parr with a 20 ga double barrel shotgun! This cartridge is obsolete, and cases must be made from 475#2 cases,which are God awful expencive, by cutting them back to 2.75", and forming in forming dies, thinning the rim to .063", and the rim diameter to .660". a loading dies set is $250, and are special order.
