I have shot 25 rounds in my ruger rsm and the scope moved. This explains my trouble grouping at 50 yards. I passed on the original rings as the fit was bad with the scope. The second set seemed better. My question is how do I get the scope to not move. My #1 in 416 had what looked like one sided sticky paper inside the rings. Was this a cheap fix or common practice?

The scope should definately NOT be moving.

I cannot assess your scope mounting ability nor the rings, scope, eye relief and a whole bunch of other nuances that may have a bearing (pun) on your RSM's scope movement issue.

I have used from nothing (as is) to the "sticky paper", Industrial Adhesives, shims, epoxies and yes, Martha, even soldering for rings, mounts & scopes. It just just depends on a whole bunch of factors.

I should imagine though with a RSM, Ruger Rings and a suitable scope that they could be assembled to hold firmly without any additonal enhancements.

The "Sticky Paper, electrical tape or other material inserted in the rings may leave dents or marks on the scope when tightly installed in the rings, If this is not an issue with you and the material is not too thick so as to damage the optic; then as a starter I would say go ahead and use the Sticky Paper in the rings and be sure to use some Loc Tite on the ring screws as well. From what you're describing though either the rings are oversized, the scope undersized or the rings and/or the mount screws are not tight enough.

Degrease your rings, then apply a single piece of friction tape in the lower part of each ring.

Thanks for the advise. I will try this and see how it goes.

Two other options are to:
1: Sprinkle rosin inside the rings.
2: Apply rubber cement to the inside of the rings. Don't worry about it making a mess as it can be easily removed if you have a reason to do so.

Everone has their own recipe, and my favorite is mentioned by snowwolfe-

Paint the lower half of the ring with rubber cement, let dry completely. Paint a second coat and let that one dry too, then assemble. I've used this on some quite stiff kickers and it does a great job of holding the scope, it won't mar the scope, and you can still get everything apart if you want to in the future. Silicone works too but you end up with a scope glued to the lower rings almost permanently.

I use bowlers rosin (little cloth baggie of powder). Works like a charm. Just pat down the prepared rings and assemble.

Just goes to show we never stop learning.....

Gerry, I agree!!! ......and I thought that I knew most of the tricks.

I also LAP all my rings in with a 1" bar.

As MARK said, clean the inside of the rings thoroughly, then coat the inside of the rings with rubber cement, top & bottom, then re-install the scope.

The very best compound for anchoring scopes is 3M ScotchKote. It works and acts like rubber cement but is 100% oil resistant and can't be softened over time by lube. It cleans up with a touch of any commonly available solvent such as MEK, acetone or brake cleaner. One can lasts many lifetimes, too.

Gentlemen and Women ----- The best method in the world to keep the scope from slipping in the rings is a short section of "Condom" around the scope. It has worked for me on several big boomers for years. Good shootig.

I use clear or black (depending on my mood) silicone adhesive in every setup. Its from the automotive shop.

I also use JB Weld (+/- 8x40 screws) on any bases installed. Automotive parts shop too. Bought in bulk.

If you have Ruger bases that are integral, use some adhesive inside the degreased rings and check the screws frequently, of course.

Hopefully someone has not lapped your rings one time too many and you are not using 30 mm rings on a 1 inch scope tube.

I use a wet bugger.

After it dries the scope is stuck for life though.

You should stop picking your nose while mounting scopes. What would your mother think?

PLEASE, it's "booger". The use of "bugger" is more appropriate for what the dangerous game will DO TO YOU when the misaligned scope puts the bullet in a non-vital area!

An example of proper usage: If you flick a booger at a cape buffalo, he will throw you to the ground and bugger you!

I lap the rings and tightenen them to spec. Never and I repeat never had a scope move even with the 12 ga FH! 13000 ft lbs of recoil! The booger may indeed be the missing ingredient though!-Rob

By a Recknagel mount and an swarovski scope with SR-rail! No problems any longer...
