Ruger #1 in 404 Jeffery
Just picked up a new Ruger #1 in 404 Jeffery and am trying to find reliable reloading data on it before I start. Already have 100 cases of Norma brass & 400 grain Woodleigh bullets anyone out there reload for the 404 Jeff?

No. It's a hopelessly obsolete round. You might as well just box it up and send it to me. I'll pay shipping.

I am surprised you were able to find a #1 in 404 Jeffrey. They did catalog it one year, and I have heard various reports of how many were actually made. One said only 40 were ever made. I did see one at a gun show the year they brought it out but thought nothing of it. If you paid a similar price to the other calibers in the #1H you got a heck of a deal. I will try to find you some data tomorrow and repost.

A year or so ago Brownell's had barreled actions for sale in that caliber at a discount.

I called Ruger to find out how many were made after I bought it but they would not release that information. They would only release that it was built in 1994. I saw one reference in Gun Digest that it was offered from 1993-95. I found it sitting all by it'self in the back of a gun store in Idaho. They had it there since 94 with no one interested in it.

Try www.hawkbullets.com They make good stuff and I think they're cheaper than Woodleighs

I can pick up a #1 in .375 H&H for $500, complete with several boxes of ammo, dies, and brass. The rifle looks like it was hunted maybe once, its so tight and clean.

I just bought my Winnie M-70 and thats the only reason I havnt grabbed this rifle yet.

Its really tormenting me, I know its still on that rack..............10

I can save you a whole lot of experimentation with the 404 Jefferys, just load it with 400 gr. bullets and start with 90 grs. of IMR-4831 and work your way up to 95 grs. at 2653 FPS, on that last load tape your glasses on and use a mouthpiece

the only other powder is RL-15 and its a distant second...

78 RL15 400 Solid 2475
79 RL15 400 Soft 2475
76 RL15 400 Soft 2200

95 IMR-4831 400 soft 2653 & 2662 w/solid
93 " " " " 2475
90 " " " " 2374
87 " " " " 2308

All 5 shot averages on chronograph with 27" barrel..

I have used the 2600 FPS loads on Buffalo and it's a little rough on the old Woodleigh softs, albeit they worked...

I have use the 2400 an 2200 FPS loads and the performed perfectly in every instance..

the latest 404 by Woodleigh are tougher..

the BarnesX in 300, 350 and 400 gr. all shot very well in all my 404's..

My best Buff load today is the GS Custom flat nose solid. I use it at about 2350 FPS and its mild and deadly as a soft point.

Thanks for all the info guys, Im new to this Forum stuff although I've been shooting and reloading for 20 plus years. I especially appreciate the info from Ray on specifics, it should speed up finding a good load. To Jeff P, I found it @ LoLo's in Lewiston (my home town). p.s. I paid the original retail price

Big SkyFlyer,
Thanks for that last bit...I can sleep a whole lot better now I know about LoLo's as they are the place that has the Speer factory seconds on bullets. Never been up to that part of Idyho as yet. Congrats on your new find...keep us posted in how it shoots.
