Ruger RSM Grouping Problem

SBTRuger RSM Grouping Problem
I have a new Ruger RSM in 375 H&H. I broke in the barrel using Speer Nitrex ammo. I had fired about 100 rounds with regular cleaning using Sweets. Using Iron sights, I was grouping about 1 1/2 - 2" at 100 yards.
After having a mis-fire, I sent the rifle back to the factory where a new firing pin spring was installed. When I got the rifle back, I had a decelerator pad installed and put on a Leupold 1.75-6x32 scope using ruger rings.
Yesterday at the range, I attempted to sight in the scope, but could not get a group any tighter than 4"at 100 yards. Same ammo. I double checked all screws on the scope as well as the rifle and all were tight. I cleaned the barrel again, and still no better. Other than maybe I was having a bad day, what else should I look at?

ScottSHas the rifle been bedded? If not, epoxy that goofy recoil plate into the stock and then bed the entire length of the action. The critical thing is, you MUST epoxy the recoil plate to the stock, don't make me repeat myself again.

My 416 Rigby was a consistent 1" to 5" grouper until I did all that. Now it shoots 1.5" groups routinely and sometimes even better.

GeorgeSShoot it with iron sights again. If it shoots like it did before you sent it back to Ruger, then either your scope or rings are not working correctly.
Check for cracks in the stock, around the magazine cutout and at the tang, too.

SBT475Guy,
Tell me a QD ring that will fit this scope on this rifle.

ScottSThe only QD rings I have seen for the Ruger RSM are Warne. I do not know if they will work with that Leupold though. All I did was replace my Ruger rings slotted nut with a wing nut, instant QD rings.
If your stock is split between the magazine mortise and the trigger group mortise, you will need a new stock. All three of my stocks have cracked there; however, those cracks, along with cracked tangs, did not effect accuracy one ioda!

retreeverSBT..
I had my Ruger bedded after firing 60 hunting loads to loosen up rifle and see where the movement is...I am shooting the 458 Lott...I have Warne mounts and yesterday sighted it in...At 100yds...I have two shots touching and
had to quit a blizzard hit the range...But I left it smiling...with a tight group....

It must be bedded...

LongShotRXI think you should give the Sweet's a break and clean with a product like shooters choice. Sweet's is a copper solvent only, it will do little for powder and carbon build-up.

SBTWarne rings are the only ones that fit the Ruger, but won't fit this particular scope. I bought some and sent them back as they are too wide. I decided against making the Ruger rings QD's with levers, as they come off very quickly as is with a quarter or screwdriver.
I think moving away from the Sweets is sound advice.
I'm hesitant to bed the rifle as I beleive the manual says it will void the warranty. But, I haven't ruled it out. Any other thoughts on bedding and particular instructions to my gunsmith?

RobgunbuilderShoot the gun with irons at 50 yrds. If you get a pattern other than a single hole, your problem is most likely in the mounts or scope. Take your scope off and find yourself a 2 ft long 1 inch diameter piece of steel. Lay it in the ring U. Does it lie flat making contact all around or is it offset? If it's OK lap the scope rings and try another scope. Does the problem persist or not? For bedding instructions, E-mail me, I'd rather not go into the correct procedure here.-Rob
