Buy the rifle ray and do bigger varmints. I have one in .416 Rigby and it is one of the most accurate rifles I own, it also has gorgeous wood. Last year I took down a groundhog that was devastating my garden with a 370 grain North Fork bullet at 2600 fps. Do you think I was overgunned. I was really mad at the hog and wanted to make sure I had proper penetration. Good shooting.

I have one in .375 and it is very accurate with mild hand loads. Worst recoiling of any rifle I own by far. You have to get a real pad on it. My .460 Weatherby Custom is a lot more comfy than the Ruger #1. Can't beat it for $700.00.

Ray, if you have never owned a Ruger #1 you are in for a treat. One of the most beautiful mass production rifles IMO. Need has nothing to do with it. I use my #1 458 Lott mainly for steel plates and water jugs.

One of the finest single shots ever made IMO. I had a 375h&h, but rebarreled it ot 338x74Keith. My other is a 7mmDakota. There is really no downside to hunting w/ a single shot, great rifles.

Buy a #1 if it floats your boat Ray. Mine is a .38-55 WCF, clearly Not a big boomer, but fun.

The #1 is a gorgeous and classy rifle for the money. Some of the best wood I've ever seen on factory rifles was on #1's...

I'm glad I read all the positive posts on the #1. I've never owned a #1 but I just ordered one. I ordered the #1 Tropical with the laminate stock and stainless in .405 Win. It should be in by Sat.

The No. 1 grabbed me as kid because it just struck me as an elegant rifle. It seemed way beyond the rimfires I could afford. Still don't have one, but it's on the list.

The #1 in .375 with a good pad should be fine.
My#1 was a 458Lott and with a Limbsaver was,to
me, fine. The #1 is a Great Rifle.

I suspect the felt recoil has a lot to do with stock shape and fit.

I must admit that two of the worst felt recoil rifles I have ever owned were both Ruger No.1's...a .375 and a .45-70. It is not the cartridges, I know that for sure. I have owned (and still own many of) and shot with pleasure, rifles in various .404's, .405's, .450's,.470's, even as big as .577's....even shot a few, though I didn't own them for more than a heart-beat, bigger than that. No, it has to be the way the No. 1's are stocked, or my body & frame.

Anyway, No. 1's ARE wonderful rifles. Between them and a couple of No.3's, I currently own somewhere at or just over 15 of them. (I do like genuine Winchester Hi-Walls just as well, and actually prefer Riedls to both for some purposes.)

The No.1 has the best lines of any regular production rifle made in th e USA in recent memory. I had one in .375 and never thought it was that hard a kicker.

Buy it!! I use my .375 for prairie dogs from time to time. As a matter of fact it's first confirmed kill was a pasture poodle taken at about 50 - 60 yards with a Speer 270 gr bullet. Shooting varmints with it is great target practise.

If Ruger #1s seem to kick harder it is most likely due to the small hard butt pads. I have a Lott with a Decelerator pad. It hurts less than my ZKK602 Lott of the same weight.

I have had two of them, the first i got when i was 16 in a 270, that was a while ago. the i got one on a steal from a friend of mine because he was to scared to shoot it. he took one in a 458 win mag and had it rebarreled to a 577 NE. it was great, kicked the hell out of me, but i have taken a few Hogs with it. really did the job to. i really love the style of them. get it you will love it.
