500 caliber question
Hello All
I seem to remember something from my FFL days that stated that any centerfire over .50 cal., was considered illegal to own. Is this still the case? Surely not, as there are a LOT of questions about these rounds.

I am no expert, but here is how I understand it.

A firearm with a bore diameter greater than .500 is considered a destructive device unless it can be shown that the firearm is for sporting purposes. The manufacturer will have to fit the proposed firearm into the 'sporting purposes' exception to get his mfr license. Once he has that, he can sell the gun to you just like any other rifle. That's why you can buy bolt action 50 BMG rifles and 577 Nitro Express doubles over the counter.
