510 Wells compared to 500 Asquare
What difference is there between the 510 Wells and the 500 A square?

Thanks!

MLindsay,
Not Much. The 510 Wells has a slightly shorter overall length, a slightly longer neck, a lesser shoulder diameter and angle.
The 500 A-Square reamer would clean up the 510 Wells chamber. They are both based on the 460 Weatherby case and .510 caliber bullets.

Some specifics from reliable sources:

In inches: 510 Wells/500 A-Square

Case length: 2.88/2.900
Head diam.: .582/.582
Rim diam.: .582/.579
Neck diam.: .534/.537
Neck length: .430/.393
Shoulder length: .110/.022
Loaded length: 3.644/3.740
Belt diam.: .603/.603
Rim thickness: .062/.063
Shoulder diam.: .560/.568
Length to shoulder: 2.340/2.485

And the shoulder angles:510W/500A2
(degrees/side): 6.74/35.0

The 510 Wells has a case capacity of 147.37 grains of water. The 500 A-Square has got to be over 150 grains of water (barely), but I do not know the exact number. The 500 A2 is just a little bit bigger.

Other similar rounds would include the 50 Buhmiller (.510" bullet), the 505 Barnes Supreme (.505" bullet), and the 50 Peacekeeper (.510" bullet).

Also, I must not forget to mention the 510 JAB, another of the 510/460 Weatherby Long's. This is the 510/460 Weatherby Improved Jenkins and Berry.

Thanks RAB

I believe I have the free use of a 510 Wells reamer, however of the 460 based 510s you mentioned do any have an advantage as far as reamer, reloading die availability or anything else?

Also of the 510s is there somewhere I can rent a reamer?

Thanks

RAB,

I am puzzled by the diferences in the following dimensions, as both rounds are based on the 460 wby, and absent turning the brass in a lathe, these dimensions should be identical:

Rim diam.: .582/.579

Rim thickness: .062/.063

MLindsay,
There is not any real difference in any of them, except in practicality. Use the readily available 500 A-Square to be most practical, but engrave the barrel "510/460 Weatherby" and then use the excellent Norma 460 Weatherby Brass. Reamers for the 500 A-Square can be rented or purchased from just about anywhere that reamers are rented or sold. RCBS makes the 500 A-Square dies as do others. I'll bet others can post in as to where they got theirs. Dave Manson (Loon Lake Precision) made my special reamers (510 JAB, and separate throating reamer). Clymer made the 500 A2. I got my dies from RCBS. My reamers are staying with my gunsmith for now. He is the "J" in JAB.

500grains,
Bear Claw got it right. Of course they should be the same as the standard 460 Weatherby in those dimensions.
