cast bullets resize 505 Gibbs?
My 505 has a bore diameter of .5060-.5065". I am sizing some hard cast gas check .511 bullets and I'm guessing my goal should be .507-.5075? I am also concerned about annealing the surface of the bullet in the sizing process. Any thoughts? It is taking quite a bit of force to get them through the die.

Assuming you are correct and your bore is .5065then you need bullets .5075 in diameter. Trying to resize hardened bullets from .510 down is going to be an exercise in frustration and eventually you will probably break your press. Your best bet is buy a mold that is custom bored to throw a .5075 bullet from Lynotype. There are a couple of guy who make them NEI?
It might be possible depending on your bullet alloy to heat the bullets up in an oven to a temp where the alloy anneals, then run them through you die and immediately drop in cold water to re- harden them. I've never done this but it might work.-Rob

For what it is worth, here is what I have done with .500s of differing bore diameter.
1. size and lube the cast bullet in an RCBS lube machine. This will size to .510" and place lube in the grooves.
2. A Lee Precision push through sizing die to reduce the diameter that is needed (say .507"). The push through design is easy to use, very quick, and the lube remains in the grooves.
Has worked for me in my Winchester years of 20 years ago and of late in my .500 bpe doubles.
Cheers,
Cal

I made a push through die to get them
to .507 Next issue: the nose is .506 and I will have to seat them rather deeply because it hits the lands. I don't think that would be a problem. I think I can just crimp on the ogive.

If you're just trying to get trigger time for grins and aren't too concerned about speeds you (big maybe) could try bullets for black powder with a softer alloy(?).

BPCR .50

Then you could try experimenting with this new fad of powdercoating.

What is the closest factory cast size? I assume my factory rifle has standard size bore so for a 505 is that 5075 I would need? Its a CZ

Gunslinger: if your groove diameter is .505 then .506 is the cast bullet diameter you want. The trick is finding the actual groove dia. A lead slug or Cerrosafe are the best ways. An inside caliper is close but tough to be exact. I find most bore diameters are larger than nominal and most jacketed bullets are smaller than nominal.

I made a sizer to bring the nose down to .500. I'll get some pics up later. I did turn down a couple of noses to .499 on the lathe. Kind of defeating the goal of a cheap, easy bullet though. Now I can seat and crimp in the groove.

I got 2174fps avg with 98gr of TAC with 2 shots and 2256fps avg for 2 shots with 100gr. This is faster than I expected. Low 2100's is my goal to make Class 3 for the Big Bore min. of 5300ft.lbs. The spread was larger than ideal also. I am still messing with sights so no accuracy testing yet. I will run out of TAC in a bit but 2520 and 8208 are giving very similar velocities with the Barnes bullet so I hope they work with the cast also.

Here is a sizer die made from a 300 win mag seater die.
end view of same die with punch

What remained of the 300WM die was just the right inside diameter to reduce just the nose of the bullet. The bullet goes in just as shown then is pushed out with the rod.

Going down to .507 is an easy pass through the die now. Going to .505 was much harder.

Hello,

When I first got my 505 Gibbs, I wrote about resizing .511 dia bullets using a 458 win sizing die. Since the die is tapered, you can vary the dia based on how far into the die you push the bullet.

This was posted on Nitro Express page 2.

That is a good idea. I thought any belted mag die would work but the ID of a sizer was not big enough for a push through. The seater die did work though.

Hello Dan416,

Yes, the die is tapered, so you don't push the bullet through the die. You push it in, and back out again. Trial and error will give you various diameters.

I have also used various sizing and seating dies as push through sizers. I have over 250 die sets from .14 cal to 10-bore. That's a lot of different sizing possibilities.
