TrapshooterWhy No .416 RUM ???
I just wonderd if anyone knew why Remington did'nt develop a RUM cartridge in .416. With the added velocity and accuracy of all the other RUM cartridges I think I would buy one if they were to ocme out with it.
( I would also buy a thick recoil pad

DaveCActually there is a .416 RUM, it is called the .416 Dakota. Case size is very similar to a RUM case. Loading data from Dakota shows it betters the .416 Rem by 150 fps with 400 gr bullets. For more velocity you need to move up to a .416 Wby (2700 fps @ 400 gr) or Lazzeroni's 10.57 Meteor=(.416")(2750 fps @ 400 gr).
Considering the existing .416's that are popular, Taylor, Remington, Weatherby, Dakota and 2 Lazzeroni's, there isn't much room for anything else.

MikelravyThis is a small market and it is pretty crowded already, IMHO

TrademarkTexanRemember that the 300, 338 and 375 RUMs got Remington into calibers they did not compete in before. They are already pretty solid in the 416 arena.

MingbogoThe nice thing about building a 416 ultramag is the availability of brass and it does not require a magnum action. The 416 Dakota is great but it is a propieatary cartridge. Now you got me thinking about a possible wildcat. Thanks.

McCraySince the case design is available for other manufacturers, I wouldn't be surprised to see a 416 WIN Mag based on the 404 case.
It would allow Winchester to advertise how their round beats the already established 416 Rem. by 100 FPS or so.

If this forum (and African forum) is any sort of a guide then a 416 RUM would only have success as a calibre if Winchester chambered for it.
How many 416 Remingtons have you seen on this site that were Rem 700??
My guess is that if the standard Model 70 Express rifle and the CZ were chambered in 375 RUM then we would see far more 375 RUMs on this site.
In short, if it has a big case and small bore then that is Rem 700 and Wby Mark V territory but for "big and slow" that is M70, Mauser and CZ territory.

AtkinsonThe smart company would come out with a standard 404 Jefferys, sometimes I think the manufacturers are totally dense, Nostalgia sells more guns than newbies, we have been bombarded with new this and that that won't do squat over what we allready have...They said the 416 Rigby wouldn't sell and its a run away train today. All the old calibers are coming back, its the latest craze, and rightfully so, they knew a thing or two the "bean counters" don't and never will. Bill Ruger figured that out many years ago with the single six, the No.1 etc.

SabotI am pretty sure Remington is not up for an "Africa Only" round. The 416 RUM just makes no sense here in the states, and the current 416 Rem is doing fine here and in Africa.
It may be a small point, but the 375 RUM in model 700 comes with a 1 in 10 twist, which will stabilize .375 bullets heavier than 350 grs...a 375 grainer will do 2500 fps at 62,000 psi. This is Remington's sleeper round...proven caliber, not outrageous in the US, deadly in Africa.

<Pfeifer>If I remember correctly there were postings on this site that said that Remingtom did indeed file with SAAMI or some org, the specs for the .416 RUM and that Saeed and a few others were able to secure these dwgs. This was a while back ...like two years ago? Anyone else remember this?

Bwana-beJMac, I'm with you.
The only problem is that they'd have to buy it from Dakota first.
But a .416-404 Imp is my pick of the 416's these days. Excellent powder capacity without compromising magazine capacity. Get's you well into the 2400's without high pressures.
Gotta get one to match my .358-404 Imp.

Hawkeye47I talked with the representative from Remington about a 416 Ultra Mag and he said they had received several inquires about when they were going to come out with the round but hadn't made the decision to load it. This was 2 years ago.
