This is the content of an e-mail I sent Hornady about the possibility of their bringing out the .404 Jeffrey and components. I know that industies promises can be fleeting but, at least they didn't respond negatively.
"I know you guys get inundated with questions like this but, I'd really
like to know. Rumors on AR Forum and other places have it that you are
going to bring out .404 Jeffery ammo, bullets and cases. Is this so and
if so, when? I'll be one of your best customers if you do!"

Dave BushI hope that if Hornaday does this, they will give us some plain old .423 Interlocks for handloading as well. However, I suspect that if they start giving us .404 Jeffery ammo, they will be loading it with the newer DGS and DGX copper clad steel bullets. I don't mind using steel bullets once and awhile but I am a bit nervous about feeding my rifle a steady diet of steel bullets. However, that means we will be able to get .404 cases from Hornaday and that will be a good deal.

WhitworthYou have to commend Hornady for introducing yet more ammo for rather obscure (obscure for the general shooting public) big-bore calibers.

ClaymanI love the way Hornady is headed with their ammo and components. It's about time someone started to introduce "popular" DG calibers at affordable prices. There is a BIG market for this kind of thing.
I also love how they introduced an affordable, high-performance line of bullets in the DGX and DGS models. It lends a welcome addition to an odd and overpriced market.

A few months ago I met Steve Hornady at the NRA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, Freedom Hall. Friendly, personable fellow, he is. I shook his hand and thanked him from my heart for all that Hornady is doing for the shooting sports, that we may survive and prosper in our endeavors.
Here's hoping that Hornady prospers with the 404 Jeffery too.

MCA manI'll keep my fingers crossed for this .404 from Hornaday. That will free me from treating my Kynoch rounds like gold (and their RWS Berdan primers), and free me from the tyranny of overpriced RWS brass. Come on Hornaday !!!!

Until then, start buying Norma brass. It's exc. quality & lasts almost forever. I have some cases that have been fried 10x, trimmed once & still look great.

For your information Woodleigh, Barnes, GS Customs, and a few others make bullets for the .404, Norma,Jamison,Horneber perhaps, and several others make 404 brass, I have never noticed a shortage and have never shot my Kynochs as they are collectable and not really very good stuff anyway IMO....
BTW, the new Huntington catalog list the new Hornady bullets in .404 caliber, and I am sure the cases are on the counter for this year.

For many years you can buy well mad ammo from RWS, loaded with SP and FMJ from Woodleigh...
I likme Hornady cause they make .450 N.E. 3,25...

AtkinsonI called Huntington and they don't have a delivery date..I suspect that Hornady has opted for so many different and new bullets, loaded ammo and brass that its playing a big time catch up game right now, and God bless'em...

Would a copper plated steel jacket produce any more wear than a copper jacket? In my experience with military surplus rounds, there is no real difference. Typically it is a mild steel jacket and the copper coating provides a measure of lubricity. Is there something different to look out for with these bullets -- I shoot a fair amount of them in 458 Lott.

GanyanaNorma produce both brass and loaded ammo in .404 using both Woodleigh and Barnes bullets. Take your pick (and don't get wallet flinch)

Steel jacketed dangerous game bullets have got to harder than military FMJ. Thats my guess. Steel jacketed danerous game bullets are harder on barrels according to many sources. I don't think it is a wise idea to shoot a whole lot of them from your 458 Lott, especially when cheaper lead cored, or even cast bullets abound. Shoot the cheaper easier stuff for practice and use the steel jackets dangerous game solids for when they're needed, imo.

I have Barnes, Kynoch, and RWS bullets on my reloading shelf, and RWS and Kynoch brass too. I know that many old time hunters were not happy with the Kynoch products, but they soldiered on with them anyway. My main complaint about .404 starts back in the 1970s when I bought mine here in the USA (FL at the time)when I could not turn up a single round outside of gun shows and Huntington's. The RWS distributor was impossible to deal with. I actually visited their facility in NJ and had to plead for six boxes of brass. RWS service remained the same until Natchez added RWS brass to their inventory about four years ago. By that time Norma was also in the mix. At least the availability of big bore brass and bullets has vastly improved over the last ten years!
