Why I like my 416.
The other day I needed to sight in a new scope on my Mod. 70, and while I was at it I wanted to "first fire" some new brass before taking it to Africa. So I loaded up about thirty cases with some Speer 350s for the sight-in and cleaned out a bunch of nearly empty boxes of bullets while I was at it.

I had some 350 Barnes Xs, about six or eight Nosler Partitions, a few Hornady RNs, and three 400grain Swift A-Frames. All were loaded over 81 grains of RE-15.

After it was sighted-in, I changed targets and used up the rest of the loads.

Firing about three shot strings and not really letting it cool down, or trying for a good group, I ended up with a nice ragged 2 inch-ish group at the point of aim from the various 400 grainers and a 1.75" hole centered and 2.5-3 inches high, from the 350 grain bullets.

A rifle that is as untempermental and easy to load for as this one makes me happy! [Big Grin] I just wish my other guns were this friendly.

Joe.

HI,

JMAC, I will get a 416 rigby from MR. Brockman, and I say again he is one of the nice men I have ever talk to, he will answer any question you ask him.Anyway from what you are saying I think, please correct if I am wrong, which most the time I am.If the 400 grain bullet is sighted in dead on at 100 yards, the 350 grain will be around 2 inchs high at 100 yards?.If I got this right that would make like great with this combination. I have heard that, all else being the same, a larger bore is more conducive to small group size.
That is, it will be easier to get a small group from a 416 Rem than a 17 Rem.

Kev,
That may or may not be correct, depends on barrel harmonics..It is only a rule of thumb and can vary differently in all barrels...Always test the loads to see for sure...
