Advice on Conversion
I have two Mauser Obendorf rifles I am thinking of as possible to re-barrel to 375 H&H and/or 404 Jeffery.

One is an 8x57 and the other is an 8x60

Is either one a better option than the other for a particular caliber? I loaded a 404 J round into the 8x60 mag, and it fit! Interesting.

My local shop dies a terrific job but I am looking at a one year wait...so any suggestions on someone who could do the work in a reasonable (90-120 days) time frame?

Noticed your post and just wanted to let you know I sent the Jeffery 404 that I bought from you to Dave Norin in Indiana. He restored the rifle to original condition, added a hidden crossbolt, reworked the trigger/safety and several other things. It is one of the finest looking rifles I have ever owned and shoots great to boot. Money well spent!!! Thanks

I like the M03 kind of cool, I have also Coonfingered the Coggie at Utah it is a nice handling gun, but I think it is a bit overpriced.

The Cogswell looks pretty rough from the pics- is that your impression? It looks like it has kinda funky crossbolts as well

&mm I am gald you like the 404- it was for your son as I recall.

I have the M03 African in 375 and was considering adding a 404J barrel

What really is going on: I took a 404J on a hunt and ended up really liking it, maybe over my 375 H&H for general bag game and for DG if necessary. I like the big bores even on PG because when you hit em, they don't go far, and the recoil isn't an issue at all.

The Cogswell rifles were the cheap end of production rifles of the time..They are good servicable rifles however...The chip on that one is fixable..I think the price is a bit high.

I would check and see if the bottom metal is aluminum as most Cogswell & Harrison rifles had aluminum bottom metal..It can be replaced of course..

All the ones I have owned were on Mauser actions, this one is an Enfield and that is probably because its in .404 caliber.

.

Thank you very much ... That has been my stand since a long time before I heard of AR or even considered the concept of owning a computer ........ .........
People say I,m over gunned ,,,but when things go wrong I,m not ...
If I could afford an English bolt Medium/Large bore it would be a 425 Westley Richards .....

That 404 is nice ,,They did a nice job on the Enfield action ... ..At least with Hornady comeing out with brass it could be kept shooting for ever ...

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Thanks for the info on the Cogswell. You can almost tell the bottom metal is aluminum from the pics...What do you think of the Enfield actions?

A guy with your money Smiler, why screw around? Buy that Dale Goens 404, twice the rifle of any of the other trash on the list.

Hi WIll

I am just a bit leery about paying big bucks for the Whitworth action on that rifle...
