50+ caliber bug
OK, you guys--you've gone and done it! I was all set to have a 450 Rigby built and was just waiting for my 416 Taylor and my 338-06 AI to be finished before I started another project. Now I'm wondering if maybe I'd like something larger and I blame y'all! After watching the thread on the 500 club grow my interest has grown in a 50 as well. I probably will never hunt elephant so I know I don't need a 50 caliber rifle---this has NOTHING to do with need! Soooooo, which 50 would you recommend for someone who shoots nothing larger than 470 NE? I'm not trying to start an argument, just curious.
Good Hunting and thanks for your input.

There has been an awful lot of discussion on this topic lately.I think practically the 500A2 has the most going for it, but the Gibbs has the Aura. In reality the actual gain over a big 45 caliber, Ackley,Lott,Dakota is debatable. How much further do you actually have to shoot through a Buffalo.
You do earn bragging rights though!-Rob

I think that the 500A2 has everything else beat for the following reasons:

1. brass availability (Norma)
2. brass quality (Norma, not Bertram)
3. brass cost ($35 for 20)
4. wide bullet selection (.510 as opposed to .505)
5. case capacity is just right (no need for a filler like 505 gibbs needs)
6. easy to build cheaply (start with cz550)

What more could a guy ask?

500Grains: What could be bad with high pressure ".510 Gibbs" (except recoil) ?

You would have to use the 408 Chey-Tac case necked up. The old 505 Gibbs brass is not built as stout as the Norma 460 Wby brass used for 510/460.

Yes, .408 chey-tac will be public aviable soon, so new high pressure cases will be possible (.458,.475,.510 etc)
