New Guy - With a new Whitworth
Hey all!

My first post here so be patient. I have found this to be one of the best discussions of Big Bores around. I have been searching the old pages and reading lots of stuff. Thank you all!

Now for the fun part. I was in a local gun emporium today and saw a Whitworth .375 on the shelf. (Now keep in mind I have 2 .375's already!) I stupidly asked the man to see it. The wood was like no other I have seen on a Whitworth. It appeared to be in 95%+ condition to me. It had been fired but the bore is clean and bright, no wear I could determine. Wood barely had any handling marks on it. I played with it...looked it over....he asked me if I wanted it. I said it was priced a bit steep for me. It has a pioneer pentax scope on it - don't think that is a good 'un. Express sights, barrel band sling, inside the trig. guard release, red pad, hooded front sight. He says let me see what I can do...He gives me a price...I don't flinch...he says how about if I throw in a box of ammo? He pulls off a box of 300 grain barnes and sets them down. I say "How could I refuse that!"

So I bought a .375 Whitworth today. Out the door for $800.00, with a $45.00 box of ammo to boot. Prolly not the deal of the century but I couldn't help myself. The rifle sort of spoke to me. Cool

I live in Kali so it will be 10days or so before pics.

One question....what type of finish was on these stocks...oil?..or..?

Dean,

Welcome to the Board. Expect you'll like the Whitworth. Can't imagine you can complain at that price.

If those are Barnes X-bullets or monolithic solids, I would not use them in your Whitworth. Something about monolithics doing bad things to old rifling that someone with a better memory or more expert than I might comment on.

These have gone up a lot, but are still worth the money. I have two, paid $235 for one and $375 for the other one. Neither is for sale.

.....There AIN<T NUTHIN wrong with shooting X bullets in a Whitworth or Super Solids either .....Whitworths don,t have OLD rifleing..... popcorn.. All my Whitworths had a oil finish on them ...,.And I would rub in linseed oil to keep it topped off ....All mine were accurate ...and very good rifles ...I pretty much regret every one I got rid of ... Roll Eyes They need a gremlin of a guy kicking himself in the ass .....Hope you enjoy it ....

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Thanks Gumboot,

They are the xlc variety of Barnes and I'll just shoot 'em for fun. The stock has an oil look but seems a bit dry. I will touch it up when I get my grubby hands on it!

Letting guns go is a part of the learning process.... Wink

Thanks Ann,

To be honest yours is one that brought it on my radar in the first place. I think yours is ideal. I read your post about it with great interest. I hope I can do justice to mine as well. Smiler

It is a .375H&H, thanks for the compliments, it's a fun to shoot gun and in need of a true test (a suitable hunt!).
