RL-7 and 458 lott results
I just did my second set of shots this morning.

#1 hornady 500gr fmj/rn factory loads box says 2300fps. Shot these for a baseline
1.2262fps
2.2268fps
3.2270fps

#2 my loads 70gr of RL-7 and a barnes SS 500gr
1.2220fps
2.2230fps
3.2218fps
shot about a inch group at 60yrds with open sights.

#3 my loads 71gr of RL-7 and a barnes SS 500gr
1.2261fps
2.2248fps
3.2266fps

At 71 grains it looked like the bullet was just touching the powder and the barnes are long. I might try another gr when I return from my hunt but am happy now with matching the factory load.

I shot all rounds from a ruger #1.

Thanks for posting these data.

How long is the barrel on your No. 1? Is it straight factory?

My ruger #1 is the stainless steel model straight out of the box. I still havent even gotten around to changing the recoilpad. The barrel measures just shy of 23inches.
Not sure if this powder works as good as Rays Imr-4320 but I had a can of RL-7.

I can tell you that I use RL-7 with the 450X bullet in my Lott with a 22" barrel. I get well over 2300 fps with 72 grains. I get almost exactly 2300 with 70 grains. I like the 2300fps load as it's accurate and very comfortable to shoot. I only have open peep sights on my gun.

One of my favorite targets is red house bricks stood up on end. I have shooting access where there is an old knocked down home. There are thousands of these red bricks lying around. At 50-100 yards hitting them is not difficult with the lott using the peep sights, while shooting free hand. They are quite reactive when hit, a red plume of smoke goes up into the air on impact.

I don't generally use the X bullets for this but rather a 450 grain GC hardcast bullet with 68 grains of RL-7. Easy to shoot and identical POI from my rifle.

That RL-7 powder is overlooked by most folks. They don't know what they are missing with that combination!

Try AA 2230 in the Lott...I get over 2200 fps at very safe pressures in the 458 Win Mag and its begging for just a bit more case capacity...
