I was just given the 23rd edition of the Blue Book of Gun Values (2002). While looking through it I found some interesting prices. Prices are listed from low of 60% condition to a high of 100%:

Holland & Holland Dominion Grade #2 $6500 - 15000

Jeffery Boxlock $1500 - 8000

Krieghoff Sidelock $4900 - 12000

Heym #80 B $2000 - 6000 #88 B Safari $3700 - 9000

Harris Gunworks <$12000

Where do these prices come from? Better yet, do sellers of fine doubles just make the price based on how much we drool on them?

For about 3 years now, I have been looking for the supposedly cheaper doubles from Birmingham.

All I really want is one that is shootable with black powder, hammers or not, and the aggresive gripping power of a stock/forearm that has been scraped, drug, and dropped. A less than fifty percenter to occasionally shoot, but more to hang on the wall behind my African hunting and big game book shelves.

Is there such a thing? Does anyone have a double rifle to sell for 500 - 1000?

Ah heck, I'll even take one that isn't shootable, been stepped on by buff or phants.

What to you attribute their pricing to? Are the lower because of excluding the sentimental and romantic value?

Don't you have a couple of doubles that are too embarassing to show in public? Doesn't every double, regardless of condition deserve a loving and faithful owner? Just one double is what I want!

I feel for you Minkman, but I simply can't reach you!

The priceing is the same as with anything else, they bring what the market will bear! The people who plce a premium on a double simply because of the fact that it is Brittish, are the ones who buy on sentamentality! That is good for me, because I couldn't care less where the rifle was made as long as it is a good rifle! Hence, I have bought some German, Austrian, Italian, and Belgeon doubles at some real nice prices, over the years!

I wouldn't own a cartridge double rifle that was in such bad shape that $1000 was a fair price!

The Tikka(Valmet) is kinda clunky but it does shoot. Mine is in 9.3 and 30.06 and both shoot 2" or under at 100 yds. Actually the barels shoot about 2" apart and the subsequent shots from each make 1" groups as long as your want to shoot. Utilitarian to say the least but then that's the Finnish way.

What caliber are you looking for?
Anything big, or just something that shoots?

Aw yes!, the little blue book of BS, they make their money selling books, end of story....

Actually I would consider any caliber, but .400 and up are preferred. Just to put on the shelf next to my 1890's pith helmet, putties, jackal skull.

Ray, The blue book is nice to look at, but a little misleading. Plus it was free! Say that sounds familiar, kind of like your relations with JudgeG's canine...
