James Lang 18 Brook St New Bond St London

Anyone know the years of operation of James Lang at the 18 Brook St. address? I just acquired a 577 BPE double by him and I'm trying to figure out when it was made. It has heavy 26" barrels, which are short for the black powder era, that are marked "577 EXPRESS". The barrels make me think that it was made in the late 1880's or early 1890's. Hope to get out and shoot it this week.

Hello. James Lang; Joseph Lang; Lang and Hussey, Grant and Lang; Churchill, Atkin, Grant and Lang; And finally Atkin, Grant. and Lang are all the 'issue' as it were of the original Lang.

London gumakets, all, and so an internet search of James Lang will be well likely to give a correct answer of when each title or style was used.

You're quite lucky that the Lang name has had so many 'incarnations' as that makes dating you gun fairly easy. Additionally they moved to and from various addresses...so again that also helps.

Another way to pursue your goal would be to purchase the book, The Standard Directory Of Proof Marks, and use it and the proof marks on the gun to determine date of proof.
IIRC, the paperback version costs about $12.00.

There is a wealth of interesting information in the book.

Try Heritage guns, they seem to know something about that period of rifle.
In the above link they are selling a shotgun with the same Lang and address and date it at 1888-1890.
