LAWN AND ALDER, LONDON?
Anybody know anything about this maker? I have a lead on a .450 x .400 - 3-1/4" made by them, but have never heard of them. The rifle is a boxlock that appears to be well made and beautifully finished. Were theya maker, or did they put their name on somebody else's rifles?

I can't be sure but I believe Lawn and Alder were a retailer. If so, they are probably like most others in the British gun trade and put there name on a trade gun. More often than not, this doesn't make it any better OR worse than any others.
(ie Army & Navy, Joseph Lang, R B Rodda, Lyon and Lyon)

Try to check if the boxlock is a WEBLEY and SCOTT Action - one of two types - a Webley Screw Grip or a Webley PHV 1 Action.
A Webley Screw Grip has a SPADE Shaped Dolls head that intersects with the toplever and normally has intercepting saftey's (small screws on the side of the fences)
A Webley PHV 1 Actions has a dolls head that looks like a club (from a pack of cards).

If so, then it was made by Webley and IMHO is likely to be a good gun.

I have a number of Webley Screw Grip and Webley PHV 1 Double Rifles with all of the names mentioned above but I know they are Webley actions. As long as I can work out it's a Webley Action and everything else checks out with the gun and it's condition, I don't worry about the name.

Hope this helps.

Post again if you need any more information.
