Mike SmithScope
I am looking to put a scope on my remington 375HH.
I want something that hopefully has either a lighted reticle or the electro-dot setup. Looking for scope suggestions. I can live without the lighted reticle if need be but figure that or the electro-dot would make my life much easier. Particularly with my eyesight these days.

RobgunbuilderSwarovski makes an excellent 1.25-4 with a illuminated dot or central lighted ring/dot combination. Just the ticket for low light leopards or backlighted Buff.-Rob

trbHow about a Scmidt & Bender 1,5-6x42 with illuminated reticle? Great field of view, reasonably good in the dark and usefull top end magnification. I use several S&B and they have excellent optics and are very rugged. Just a thought.

oddballshootersYou might look at the Burris line they have a lighted dot. I use the 1.5x6 and find it works well on my 416

<Buliwyf>Hey Mike:
This question has been on my mind a lot lately also. My research indicates that the Leupold 1.5-5x20 VariX III gets a lot of nods from experienced big game hunters. Maybe the all-time best selling scope for dangerous game/big game rifles?
I recommend you consider the Leupold 1.5-5x20 Illuminated Reticle German #4 Dot.

HunterJimMike,
I have been working on multiple scopes on three .375s (two H&H and one .376 Steyr). Part of the answer lies in how you intend to use your rifle. The .375 H&H is a terrific general purpose cartridge -- you can hunt anything with it. If you truly intend to keep your rifle general purpose, then you want a scope choice that will be as general purpose as the rifle.
If you plan to include low-light or no natural light hunting such as for leopards ove bait, then you will need in my experience a scope with an objective at least 36 mm in diameter. The power should be in the low-end, i.e. in the 1.5X to 6X range, and perhaps in the 2X to 8X or 3X to 9X. The makers are concentrating their product development in the variable scopes, and I recommend them over fixed power scopes because of that. All of them have 3-9X scopes, a recognition of its popularity.
Lately I have used a Kahles 1.5-6X42, and that scope (although not at the absolute top-end) is great.
Adding illumination to the scope means that you will push the price up; be prepared to spend more for the scope than you would for the rifle. I have been using the illuminated-reticle Trijicon scopes since '99, and I can really see the advantages of illumination (pun intended.
I recently sold a Swarovski 1.5-4.5X20 scope from one .375 in order to move up to the newer Swarovski low-power, illuminted scope, or perhaps a Zeiss. I am still checking scopes out -- I wqant to at least look through examples before buying.
My judgement is the 1.5-5X 20 straight tube scopes were useful designs, but we can do better now. Thank you scope manufacturers!
Another way to handle scope choice is to buy two scopes, and have both mounted in rings and return to zero mounts and sighted-in. Then you can have both a back-up and a specific purpose scope in one scope (such as somethig that will handle leopard hunting).

Mike SmithJim, I had a Khales that I sold to 500grains late last year. It was a midrange scope. I really loved the optic clarity. My problem was it was a mil-dot setup. Since my eyesight went seriously south for the duration I decided to sell it. Truth is I couldnt see the damn dots clearly anymore. However, I would not hesitate to get another Khales if I can find what I want. I have my Leupold 2.5 4A on the 458. The 376 Steyr got my Leupold 2 X 7. I want a little more versatility for the 375 HH. I really like the looks of the Swarovski Battue lighted reticle. It looks to be a cross between a 4A and a standard lighted setup. I wont know until I get to play with one though. One of the guys in RSA had a lighted scope that I used for some night shooting. I dont remember what it was but it worked fine. I guess I just need the extra help the lighted reticle can give these days. If you decide on one please let me know. I would be interested in knowing why you chose it.
Mike
PS I know the scope will set me back more than the rifle but it is money well spent.

500grainsI like a 1.7-6 or 2.5-8 leupold for the .375, depending on the range of shots.
