kiwiwildcatFired my first .458 Win Magnum
Fired 2 rounds (standing) from a guys Ruger Mark 1 458 with 500gr solids at 2100 fps. Previous to that, the biggest calibre I had fired was .375 H&H.
Well I wasn't disappointed and I was blooded! as during the first shot the front sling swivel stud came back and took a chunk of flesh off the tip of my index finger! Second shot I made sure my finger was well out of the way.
I would say that even though the recoil certainly moved me, it wasn't punishing. I understand that shooting these things standing is not as punishing as off the bench. I will say though I shot my mates .375 H&H off the bench one day with just a light shirt on and I found it not punishing, despite the fact it was an 8 pound rifle and he had some pretty hot loads with 300 gr.
I am soon to be helping a mate work up loads with GS Customs in his .458 Win Mag, which will involve shooting off the bench. That will be the real test!
You should try to find, or build, a standing bench. Best of both worlds, steady forgood accurate shooting - nearly as good as a sitting bench - and you are standing so recoil isn't abusive. I've done over 45 rounds of 458wm off a standing bench in a day's load work ups. Half that number off a sitting bench and I'd be punch drunk.

I feel sorry for you, now your wallet is going to be much lighter.
I fired a 458WM for the first time last year and now I have 2) 375H&H's a 458WM and a 458LOTT.
Oh yeah, I also have a much lighter wallet

Hmmm, JTex, I'm thinking of that saying, "In for a penny, in for a pound." From none to an arsenal of big bores in a year shows real commitment, which institution committed you?

John303.I've never fired anything over a .300 Weatherby but the first time i fired my #1 the front swivel stud gave me a good bite. I moved the stud to the tip of the fore-end to end that problem. Doesn't look that bad, but a barrel band would be look a more apprpriate. --- John 303.
