ChrisTroskie550gr Rhino Solids in .458 Lott
Does anyone have experience with loading 550gr solid bullets in a .458 Lott?
What loads do you use?
I've loaded 81gr of Somchem S335 behind Rhino's 500gr Solid Shank bullets and my CZ seems to like this combination.
Would like to get some advice on a starting load for the 550gr bullets with the same (or similar) powder.
Thanks,

Thanks,
Chris,
Although I have used quite a few 550 grain Woodleighs out of a Lott on buff and elephant. I have only used American powders so that probably won't help you.

ChrisTroskie465H&H,
Thanks, My local gun dealer has a chart that compares local SA powders with other available powders. So if you can tel me what worked for you using American powders and what your loads were it would be useful.
What kind of velocities did you get with the 550gr Wooldeighs?

shootawayI get 80 grains max with H4895 with 500gr soft bullets of all sorts. With a 550 soft I use 77grs and 75.5 with the solids.

465H&HChris,
I think the two most widely used powders here for the Lott are IMR-4320 and H-4895. I prefer H-4895 as IMR-4320 caused a problem with bullets creeping forward from powder compression. H-4895 is a little faster so less is needed than for IMR-4320. I had a 23" barrel on mine and I got 2,150 fps with H-4895. Believe me that is all you need. I would start at 75 grains of either and work up to 2,150 fps while watching for pressure signs.

shootawayThis from a book, 550gr bullets for the Lott, somchem S-335,
min load 75gr
max load 78gr
max velocity 2073fps
There is no indication if the data is specifically for solids or softs.
If you want to know the name of the book and page number just PM me.The book lists Magnum,Sept 1988 as a data source.
