404 Jeffrey Ammo
Who makes ammo for the 404 Jeffrey?

I have a friend who is looking for factory ammo with bullets that fit a groove diameter of .424"

It's for a custom rifle he is having built.

Thanks.

Norma African PH. I don't know if RWS are attainable in States?

Leapin' lizards, Sandy!

Kynoch is asking $42.50 for FIVE rounds of .404.

Back when I bought my Cogswell & Harrison .404 in 1970, I managed to find eighty rounds or so of Kynoch 400 softpoint ammo in Boxer-primed cases. They cost $5.85 per five.

Running that price through an inflation calculator on Yahoo, $5.85 represents about $32.00 in today's moola, so maybe it's not as bad as it first appears.

HOWEVER....when .375 Ultra Mag brass is $15.00 for 20 rounds, and my 400-grain NEI cast bullets are about three cents each, the virtues (and value) of handloading are very evident.

I still have most of the brass from that early purchase, and some Berdan cases as well, but the reformed .375 stuff does most of my shooting these days. The NEI bullet works very well even at speeds above the factory level, but it's a light rifle and the .404 doesn't need any juicing-up to kill anything on earth.

Actually, most of what I do with the .404 now is well-accomplished at around 1800 fps....you still know that there's some authority in one's hands.

The African PH ammo is expensive indeed, but i might buy an box or two if ca 25 dollar per round is up with my budget that is.

But it will be loaded with homeloaded rounds most of the time.

Load your own. Far more economical and a better selection of bullets.

I would never have built a .404jeffery if factory ammo were my only choice. That is definetly a handloaders round IMO. clap

I will have top level 404J ammunition available commercially at the end of the summer, at a relatively reasonable price. The kicker is the cost of the brass and premium projectiles (plus my huge advertising budget).

lawndart, woe is me. I just received a French ammo dealer's catalog and the listed price for the Norma PH ammo in 404 Jeffery is 167 Euros for a box of 20. Say about $200 per box or $10 per round.

So, I say to myself, a definite case for handloading with what everybody swears by. I contact Mike at Northfork. He sold ALL of his 423-380 SS to D'Arcy Echols. ALL OF THEM! I guess I'll have to be content with some NF Flat Point Solids and Swift A-Frames. I know, worse things have happened to better people, but still. So when are your 404 cartridges really going to be ready? Do you need a poster child for your advertizing campaign?

It's a tough proposition to buy 404 ammo, and maybe that will change soon..I buy Norma brass as its reasonable and 404 brass lasts a long time..Lots of good bullets around. I like Northfork and Woodleighs in softs, they both work very well. I love the cup points that Northfork makes, I see no reason for him to make any other bullet! Smiler Smiler Smiler

Factory ammo is just too expensive for most pocket books, RWS is the best brass and ammo made today IMO, if you can get it and I think you can in Europe..

I never buy loaded ammunition for this round, but RWS is loading now this round with high speeds (advertised 2350 ft/s)

The search for the Holy Grail in its modern form. If anybody has an answer, please send me a PM as I have a volunteer mule to bring stuff from the US to me in about a week.
