Heard he died today in the presence of loving family, of pancreatic cancer. Always liked his stuff. Seemed to me like a chip off the O'Conner block, and I believe he struggled with depression, etc. My kinda guy.

I've only been 'into' guns for going on 14 years now, but I've seen a few names I started reading about since the beginning of my interest 'pass on'.
It's kind of like you get to know the Man by his words.
Gary Sitton will be remembered with fondness and respect.
And, he'll BE THERE when we get there, ready to carry on!

Although I didn't know him well, he came into the Tucson gunsmith shop where I used to work in the early 90's. I had a few brief conversations with Gary. When I strarted thinking about a new rifle for black bear and elk, he convinced me to chamber my '09 Argentine in 338-06AI. He loaned me the reamer. I think the seed of interest in truely efficient cartridges was planted by him.

Mr Sitton will be sorely missed in the shooting community. Our prayers will be for his family. I liked his writing style, and heis understanding of the value of PRACTICAL cartridges in the hunting field. Bill/Oregon likened him to O'Conner, but I disagree, he was, like some of his cartridges, filled a hole between two extremes, O'Conner, and Kieth, that sorely needed filling.

I for one will miss him!

It seems years and years since I have read anything GS had penned. I heard he had some troubles, both personal and other, some years ago and then nothing...until now. He was a mighty fine writer.

I am sorry to hear that. I enjoyed reading his work. I especially enjoyed the Backtracking section, I believe it was called in Petersen's Hunting magazine. It was the last page and he wrote under the pseudonym Gary Bowers. Really good stuff. The only writer I cared for who did that piece. Rest his soul.

Gary Sitton was one of The Great Ones. I like Mac's placement of him between O'Connor and Keith in the Pantheon.

I was always puzzled by his disappearance from print. Depression? That makes him human, more real, and we can never know just what life handed him. Life is not fair. I pray he didn't suffer at the end of this vail.

Anyway, I'll bet he is packing his featherweight .35 Whelen Ackley Improved in The Happy Hunting Ground. He inspired me to do a .35 Brown-Whelen on a Winchester Model 70 Classic Stainless Featherweight. I should have gone with the Ackley like Gary ...
