Andy416 Weatherby Info
I have a friend who recently acquired a 416 Weatherby.
Do any of you Weatherby owners have advice for him about bedding the stock? Is the barrel and action adequately reinforced as it comes from the factory?
Would also appreciate any reloading data with your favorite loads, including bullet, powder, and velocity.
Thanks, Andy

Ed ScarboroI changed stocks to an HS Precision stock and I had a gunsmith bed it in that stock. I am loading 114gr of RL22 with 400gr Swift A-Frames and 215M primers. This shoots 1 inch or less at 100yds and mv is right at 2700fps.

Big Bore Boar HunterWeatherbys are good to go from the box. Make sure the bolts mating the stock to the receiver are snugged up. A few rounds from the 416 should straighten his spine just right.
As for bullets, it depends on his quarry. I would pick the 400 gr TSX for the big bovines, and the 400gr woodleighs for most anything else.

CCMDocI love my 416 Weatherby. I've put several hundred rounds through it with no ill effects to the rifle or to me (as far as I can tell)

I've used it for one-shot elk at nearly 400 yards (my avatar is the recovered Swift A-Frame)and all of my African plains game. I put a couple of Swift A-frames into my dad's Cape Buffalo after it was down and out just to see - one penetrated completely, the other was a beautiful mushroom after going through nearly an entire Cape Buff.
If I had but one bullet - 400 grain Swift A-Frame would be it - mainly because I have had great experiences with it. I've used North Forks - both soft and solid cup points as well as a number of monolithics - you cant go wrong with any of them.
Great caliber, great rifle!

As far as reloading data - I'll pull out my reloading log books for the 416 WBY and PM you with my recipes.

N E 450 No2I had a Weatherby MKV in 416 WBY Mag.
I shot it a fair amount.
The action screws would loosed up every 12 rounds or so.
Check them often.

<Mike McGuire>They will shoot better when properly bedded and floated and then the actions screws won't loosen in a few shots like NE 450 no 2 said.
But as they come they are good and won't break stocks. They have a barrel lug about an inch in front of the action that is glass bedded, two hidden cross bolts and the tang sits on top of the stock.
There is probably no other gun company that has anywhere near the experience of Wby with the big recoilers. There has been a lot of 378s and 460s sold since the mid 1950s

buffaloI have used several 416 wbys in the last 13 years. I have settled on a CZ550 action in a MPI stock with a barrel recoil lug and two crossbolts. Have shot one barrel out ( a Douglass after 2000 rounds). Have just rebarreled to a SS Krieger barrel. Coated with a black teflon finish it is nice to look at and corrosion proof...
I use 400 grs TSX at 2785 f/s with F-215 and 117 grs MRP
350 grs TSX at 3030 f/s with 125 grs MRP
300 grs TSX at 3220 f/s with 120 grs Norma 204
330 grs GS Custom HV at 3100 f/s with 117 N-204 or 124 grs MRP
ALL loads safe in my rifle - but start lower and work up with caution in other rifles..
All loads gave sub inch groups with the old barrel - hope the same - or better - with the Krieger barrel.. Havent tested it yet
