CZ 550 Magnum Question

farbedoCZ 550 Magnum Question
Is the .458 Winchester Mag built on the same length action as the .416 Rigby?
I have an opportunity to get one in .458, but have no interest in that cartridge. I have a .458 Lott already.
Now, if I can convert it to .450 Rigby, that is a different story. I have zero need for this cartridge either, but it would be good fun.
Thanks,
Jeremy

BiebsThe Rigby has a much larger and longer case than a 458 Win Mag, which was designed to fit into a 30-06 "standard" length action. That being said, CZ may use the same action size for all their safari rifles. Wayne at AHR would know, as would many folks on this forum.

MJinesI have/had CZ550 Magnums in .375H&H, .416 Rigby, .458 Win and .458 Lott. All were build on the same length actions. In fact, CZ at one point took a bunch of the .458 Wins, reamed them out to .458 Lott and remarked the barrels.

gohip2000They are all the same size action from 375 to 505 gibs. The bolt face are different sized though. The rigby case has a larger bolt face than the 458 win mag. So you would have top have the bolt face opened up and maybe some work on the feed rails.
If you found one in 416 rigby, you could leave the bolt alone and the feed rails, but you would have to rebore the barrel or get a new barrel.

416RigbyHunterI am currently doing this very conversion, yes they are all the same length.
Other than changing the barrel, you will also need to open the bolt face, feed rails and ramp. You will also require a 416 Rigby follower, 375 style mag box and Rigby extractor, the 458 one's are not interchangible.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.

farbedoThanks guys. This information helps. I wish the rifle I was offered was a 416 Rigby, that would make this simple. It's a 458 Win, so that prompted the question.
No problem opening the bolt face, re-barreling or working on the feed rails. That is work I can do.
I really just needed to know if the length was correct. I haven't handled many CZ rifles and am not familiar with them.
416RigbyHunter: Does CZ sell these parts, or are they available through a reseller?
Can the extractor just be modified?

Philip A.Jeremy, CZ sells the 550 in .450 Rigby. It may be easier to sell the .458 and use the money to buy a .450...
CZ are excellent rifles. They need to be smoothed up as they come "rough around the edges" from the factory, but it's first class steel and an extremely reliable tool.

416RigbyHunterFarbedo,
The extractor could be modified, but I find it easier to just buy the correct one from CZ.
I also had to buy one for my 404 build, here in Australia, I paid $95 each.

Cheers.

Very true! I once saw one where they marked the "Lott" almost completely below the woodline. Almost sent it back to CZ until we looked very closely and then removed the stock.

My .458 is part of that bunch; it is marked as usual '.458 Win' in the standard neat manner but above that, in much shallower rollmarking is the '.458 Lott/'

I have had two versions of the CZ .458 Lott.
The first one was a remarked .458 Win Mag.
The second one came in a "Kevlar" stock and was
properly marked only with this on the barrel:
CAL. 458
LOTT
I guess I have been through a couple dozen
of the CZ 550 Magnums, rebarreling, rechambering, and occasionally
leaving them as factory chambered.
I agree they can be the basis for a custom rifle
that cannot be beat.
