Back Early (Pig & Horse Pics)
Ihave returned from my trip prematurely from the gulf of Carpentaria I only managed 3 boars and a couple of horses. My friend shot 4 boars and no horses. We never got to fis as the scrub was so in-pentrable we could not get to to the coast.
I will have a couple of pics in the nextfew days which if someone would post for me that would be good.
I have learned a lesson from this trip as due to the thick scrub in that area and no dogs the hunting was almost impossible and you sought of flooked upon stuff. We also took up far to much gear, half of which we did not need (16 guns between two people, two motorbikes a boat we couldn't use trailer etc etc we have driven around 8000 km's in the past 11 days).
Unfortunately when I shot both feral horses I had my boring old 30/06 Ruger loaded with 165 gr Nosler BT's, this load did the trick with no problems. I wish I had of had my .585 to shoot the horses with but the times I had that nothing was to be found.
I shot my boars with my cz .375 loaded with Hornady 300 gr RN's and they worked a treat.
Will get my pics developed and get them on here in the next couple of day's.
Good to be in my own bed all the same !! swags are comfy but hey

Jesus! I did not know 16 guns would fit in a Toyota.
Sorry the trip did not go perfectly, but at least there was some shooting. Were the motorcycles not usable in the scrub?
500,
the bikes could be used along the track but the scrub was thick enough that even walking through it was hard let alone a bike. There were also termite mounds every few yards. The bikes were great along the track that lead into camp, much quicker than taking the ute. I will put this one down to experience
For the cost that it took to do this trip I could probably neally have a afforded to shoot a kudu in Africa (something I plan/would like to do)

NitroX"16 guns between two people"
It is always good to take less firearms than the number of days you will be hunting
And you've got to carry the beast if you're going to get to use it!
I always take too much gear on every hunt, and always say I'm going to take less gear next time.
I have hunted on the Gulf coast of Arnhemland int he NT and as you get closer to the coast itself the scrub can get very thick. Whereabouts did you go in Qld? And they let you shoot horses too?

Mate save your money and come up my way next time. You wont need a boat as I have one

Bring the bikes but, they're handy
Bakes
Bakes,
maybe I could come and vist you next year mate I will bring a minumum of gear this time however
Nitro I went to a station past the Hells Gate Road House. They said we could shoot a few horses, I suppose either the shooters shoot them properly or they get whopped in the ass with an SLR from helicopter during a cull

NitroXI wish I could have shot a horse or two from time to time. Especially when the bloody stallions chase you!

Maybe they just wanted a sugarcube and a stroke.

another Kudu special!
P.C What part of the gulf is the area you went?
Say in relation to Normanton, Bamaga ? etc.
Karl.
Just past Hells Gate Karl, was the staion we went to. I am having regrets now I have come home early, have thought of things which would have made a better fist of it. I have learnt a few things for next time I suppose.
Would some one be able to post a couple of pics for me ??
PC,
Sorry wasn't paying attention.
Hell's gate!
Mate, come over this side of the Cape next time where this is less of the 'untamed frontier' getting in the way of things you want to kill and fish.
Karl.
Karl, we will have to catch up at some stage for a hunt/fish. The wilderness at Hells Gate just cramped my style

500grainsPC,
Would you do such a trip again? How would you plan it differently?
500,
Yeah I would definitely do it again. I would only take a couple of rifles each and a shot gun for there are heaps of ducks etc. I would not so much bother about taking a boat. Rather after shooting I would stop in and have a charter company take me out in a proper sized boat. We were not going to risk taking a 9 foot tinny for a 30 minute boat ride out to sea in that country.
I would also have proper planned "drive to destinations" for each day.
The other way is to pay for the services of a guide for a few days and just fly up to Cairns and work from there. And in all honesty that would work out a hell of a lot cheaper. Although I saw some interesting country on my drive up and back.
I have defintely learned that to much gear can really be a hinderance.
500, I would also go in September or October when things had dried out more and the game would have to come to the lagoons more for water.

Why not? You would be like the real crocodile dundee! (forgot his name again).
He was "boat-wrecked" on an estuary on the Gulf Coast in Queensland too.

MarrakaiNitroX:
Perhaps you are referring to that little prick Rod Ansell, who achieved fame by becoming completely drug-f*cked and murdering a young Territory copper in cold blood. Less said about him, the better! ...except his 'adventure' occurred on the west coast of the Top End, up the Fitzmaurice River SW of Darwin. Rumour has it that he was illegally croc-shooting at the time..
