Opinion: Whitworth "cross bolt" floorplate release
I have a chance to buy a .375 H&H Whitworth Express Rifle. It has the later Mark X Mauser floor plate release with a button at the front of the trigger guard bow that is pushed side-to-side to release the floor plate. A shallow channel is inletted in the bottom of the stock for this button to move in.

It seems to me that any cut weakening the magazine area of a stock on a heavy-recoiling rifle is a bad idea. I don't know how this bears out in actual use. Does anyone have practical experience using a rifle with this style floor plate release that can show whether this matters or not?

Thanks for your input.

To ease your worry, replace the floorplate spring with a stronger sping...Glass bed the action and tang.

I have never seen a problem with the Whitworths, but I mostly have used the older guns...Glass will handle any problems the 375 has...
