German Weatherby 378
recently bought a German 378 because a) it stayed reasonable and b) I've never had one. got some used brass and dies and have ammo loaded. unfortunately the seller doing a lazy job of packing and ups a worse job of handling broke the stock and the imperial 2.75-10 scope both completely in half. neither has done anything to compensate me yet. did get a replacement correct stock but of course had to chisel out all the epoxy bedding around the barrel recoil lug and don't have that rebidded yet so can't shoot it yet.

ANYWAY, my question is, do these have to be loaded from the bottom or am I missing something real obvious. it's a single stack, the follower is just a flat piece of steel, no offset. and there's no way I can discern to get a round loaded from the top past the feed lips of the magazine box.

It loads from the top put a round on top of the magazine and push it straight down. The feedlips will spread out of the way.

Actually they are not single stack. However, either cartridge is forced into the centre line. Thus they get the reliable feed and in line feed gets.

You can also open the floor plate and drop the rounds in but do it with the bolt pushed forward.

thank! didn't want to push that hard till i knew for sure. that's sort of a cheaper version of the spring loaded feed lip on a schuler 500 jeffery.

If what you have is a Mk V action, it loads from the top. If you have a Schultz and Larsen action it is in fact a single stack and will only load from the bottom. I had a 378 with a Southgate pad that according to Wby was built on the Schultz and Larsen action about "57 or 58" before the Mk V action was enlarged for that cartridge. If the Mk V stock fits, it's not a Schultz. The early guns also were sans muzzle brakes.

it's the mark v. '69 or '70, forget which. no brake , barrel is same as the 340 i had and full up with a leupold 1.5-5 is 2oz lighter than my ruger m77 338 winmag. should be a real hoot to shoot.

When the manufacture returned to America around 1995 from memory, the 378 barrel became what Wby calls their Number 3.

That is the contour they use for the 416 Wby and also the Accumarks.
