I have a Ruger No. 1 in .458 WM on the way. I was planning on rechambering it to .450 NE #2, but am also considering a rebarrel to .470 NE, or perhaps .404 Jeff. If you were faced with the same daunting decision, what would you do with it?

I think I'd try to find a way to add about 3-5 pounds to the rifle. :-)

No joke. The 404 might not kick the snot outa ya as much as your other choices.

Sell it Or trade it!!! if you don't know what you are going to do with it why are you getting it??

Worst case scenario rechamber to 458 lott it will be all the recoil you will want to handle, and leave it a light weight rifle so it's easy to carry!! Eeker

Haha, I got it because I can. I could just rechamber it for .460 Weatherby, and have the smith turn the barrel to a lighter profile, for the ultimate in clavical carnage.

If this is going to be a "fun gun", go with the .450 Nitro Express or .45-120, if you're nostalgic for the old West.

If you intend to hunt North American game with it, go with the .404. It is more versatile than the .45 caliber cartridges, and has less recoil.

Trade it for a M-70.....or just get a shovel and bury it.

On egun.de, the German gun auction site there was recently a Ruger number one Tropical for auction with the explanation that it had been re-chambered to 460 Weatherby and had failed to pass the German proof.

I think the German proof is a 30 % overload but am not certain about that. At any rate the action failed with a 460 Weatherby. A 458 Lott would work fine.

Actually, we have two Ruger #1 converted to 460 Weatherby. They do kick quite a bit, but, after a couple of rounds of full power 577 T.Rex, they seem very tame beer

George, the 450NE 3 1/4" reamer will clean out the 458 Win Mag chamber, but the 45-120 will not! The 45-120 is nothing more than a very long 45-70. My choice would be the 450NE 3 1/4", along with a very good recoil pad!

If re-barreling is an option, then I would have a 26" barrel installed, and chamber it for 450/400NE 3" with a .411 bore!

Remove the barrel ,use it on a CRF Ruger MK II. Rebarrel the No. 1 to some ultra long range caliber where one longrange shot would be fun and safe.

Personally, I like the 450 #2. There's just something about those huge cartridges.

By the way, what's the story with Castle Arms? I was in Quincy a few months ago and and after hitting Gamemaster and Merkels decided to check them out. I drove by the address listed on their web page -- it looked more like a crack house than a gun shop.

Stick some recoil reducers in the stock and hunt American Bison with it.

I'd rebarrel it to .450 Ackley Mag for three reasons, none very important:

1. I've always had very good success with that cartridge, and

2. I've still got quite a bit of Norma cylindrical (unformed) ,magnum brass on hand, and

3. I've got a .450 AI-Mag reamer on hand and don't have a reamer for something I might prefer more, which would still clean up the original chamber.

Given my druthers, if it HAD to stay in .45 and if I had a .450 Rigby reamer (.450 NE 3-1/4"), I'd set the barrel back and rechamber for that.
