i recently got a remington 700 in 416 mag. my question is what model of rifle is this. it only has 700 on the reciever and it says 416 rem mag on the barrel. it has open sights and has a wood stock. it looks just like a basic model bdl. Did remington offer the 416 in the basic bdl model?....or is this a custom model?

Depending on how recently you bought the rifle. Current production stock numbers for right hand rifles in 416 are 26122 for the 700 safari KS and 26147 for the African Big Game Rifle. If you have the box the stock number will be listed on the end on the yellow tag. Both current production 416 are listed as custom shop rifles.

Call Remington Customer Service and see whether they can tell you what it is by the serial number.

I had a Rem 700 416 not long after the calibre came out. It was heavy barrel, open sights and Americna classic style stock and no forend tip.

The rife you describe sounds like the old 375 Rem Safaris which had big barrels and looked just like a Rem Varmint with longer action and open sights.

Do the barrel marking indicate Remington. If not it might be a rebarrel of an old 375 Safari.

I looked at something like this. This gun seemed just like BDL Classic, but it had iron sights, and 2 crossbolts in stock. It was marked "Classic Safari" and tagged at $950. I would call it early (ca.1989) 'Safari Grade.' That's custom shop special order only.

thanks for the feedback guys, i called remington and gave the historian my serial number and it was made in 1990 and it was a safari grade which was only offered from the custom shop only. He said in 1990 the rifle sold for $905... Anyway i hope all the things ive read about the 416 and the extractors arent true..

Looks like this thread has wrapped up. Before everyone wanders off can anyone comment on the Remington Model 700 XCR in .375 H&H? Anyone own one?
