<socal hunter>458 lott
What is the recoil on this. Is it close to 460 wby or stronger. I shoot alot of 300wby now with out any problem I want to get into big bore rifles. Is this a good choice. Also who makes theese rifles in this caliber?

470 MbogoWith comparable rifles the 458 Lott recoil will be substantially less than the 460 Weatherby. Your shooting the same weight bullet at 300 fps less with a lot less powder. There are some recoil comparrisons up on my website at
www.470mbogo.com under the "Comparing The Big Bores" section. Just get yourself a good recoil pad like the Pachmayer triple magnum model F990 and keep your gun weight to 10 lbs at least. With a staight line stock and the two other factors you will end up with a very shootable rifle. Your 300 Weatherby will probably have a sharper recoil than the Lott but the Lott will have more.

HunterJimSoCal,
Ruger chambers the .458 Lott in their M77 RSM model, and in the Number 1. You could also get a .458 WM CZ550 and have the chamber re-done for the Lott.

Longbob470 is right about the realative recoil between the two. However, all new factory 460 Weatherbys come with a muzzle brake (I hate them!) and most 458 Lotts are brake free. Thus the Lott will kick you more than the Weatherby. I have them both and I can verify such. If you are interested. I have a neat 460 Weatherby for sale in the classifieds.
With all of that being said. If you get the Lott, keep the weight above 10lbs with a well designed stock and you will be just fine. Wear a recoil pad on the range to help prevent you from developing a flinch. And don't worry about any recoil when you are shooting at game. I promise that you will never notice it. It is one of life's great mysteries.

OldsargeAll of the above is true except there ain't nothing mysterious about adrenaline. I have done things with my fingers with buffalo around that would take a pair of pliers to do under normal circumstances. You will not only not feel the recoil, you probably won't even hear the gun go off! I didn't and my Rigby goes 100 fps faster than a normal Lott.
Use a sand bag to sight in then do all your practice off sticks. Hold on tight and don't try to put more than a round or two down range at first. Then work up to five controlled rapid fire shots. When you can do that, you're ready. And don't try to drive a Lott faster than about 2200-2250 fps. Keep the pressure down. They game will never know the difference.
