ELKampMasterGot mine as well, thanks Lawndart!!
.600 freebore, just like Ray Atkinson said....
Measured towards the muzzle from the olgive of the straightest sided round nose I could find (a 500gr flat nose TBBC) that is going to make for one looooong throat on my 458 Lott. I am looking forward to 2350+ fps though.
Again, thanks Lawndart!

lawndartSorry it took a while guys.
I usually catch up on my mailing when I have a pile of charts to dictate and am just not in the mood. Kind of like how my house always got cleaned the week before final exams on a day when I was burned out from studying.

AtkinsonRemember the powder for the 458 Lott is IMR-4320, and with a long throat and a 26 inch tube you will get some safe but scary velocities with it...I don't dare quote them as some naysayers would be on me like a duck on a june bug, but they lack balls to try!

Ray,
I notice you obviously like IMR-4320 in the Lott. Have you experimented much with H-4895? It works very well in my rifle. With the Barnes 450 gr. I get a very consistent 2,350 fps. I could probably get more but my gun seems to like that combination.

csutton7Whitworth--it was about why the Lott was developed--who worked on it after the Jack Lott developed it--some load data, etc....it was a 1991 article in Rifle by G. Sitton--chris

lawndartBasically in the article Mr. Sitton gives most of the load work-up credit to his great uncle Ray Atkinson.
As I understand it (personal correspondence with Mr. Sitton), Ray had four or five 55 gallon drums of IMR 4320 that "fell off the back of a truck back east" that he was trying to sell to buy a roping horse. Anyway, that's when Ray started telling everyone that 4320 was the "go to" powder for the 458 Lott.
It is really neat when you find out "the rest of the story". Speaking of which, Ray gave that line to Paul Harvey. Mr. Harvey is Ray's younger cousin, twice removed.

Paul HI'd like to get a copy of the article as well if possible. I have a few other articles on the Lott, but don't believe that is one of them.

lawndartAnyone who wants a copy please send an e-mail with your address to me at noak@direcway.com

PS For those who don't want to load I will be producing commercially loaded ammunition for the Lott (among others) as soon as the ATF paperwork gets sorted out. The ATF just moved from Washington DC to a more rural site in Virginia. Hopefully that will improve their paperwork proccessing time.
I should have some ready in time for the show season next winter.
