Need help with balistics
Next month I'm going on safari. A friend will be hunting with the same PH before me and has offered to leave his rifle and ammunition so I don't have to carry one. I accepted. The rifle is an H.S. Precision take down with a different barrel/bolt/scope combination for a 416 Rigby and a 300 WSM. We shot the rifles tonight at the range and I am comfortable with both. They handle very well and seem very accurate. The mercury tube in the stock really seemed to tame the recoil on the 416. Since the ammo is limited, we could not shoot a bunch at different ranges.

Anyway, can anyone provide the ballistics for the following rounds at various yardages? I'd like to memorize them before the hunt.

1) 416 Rigby Barnes 400 Gr XLC bullets(soft)
103.5 Gr of IMR 7828, Norma case, Fed 215 primer. Sighted in for dead on at 100 yards. Seemed to hit right on at 25, and about 1 inch high at 50.

2) 300 WSM Sierra SPBT 200 Gr bullets, 69.5 grains of IMR 7828, unk primer. Sighted in 2" high at 100. Was able to hit each gong at the range from 300-500 yards.

Thanks in advance.

SBT,
welcome

we'll need the velocity of your loads, from your gun in this matter, anything else would be a guess.

But, free advice, leave the 300 in the case, and stick with the 416, unless you KNOW it's going to be a 250+ yard shot. you could even rig a leather pack for it, and (forgive me) leave it in the car. But, as it's been said a million times, you'll have the wrong caliber in your hands, at the wrong time. The basis for this advice is that you have too wide a spread between YOUR heavy and your light. The rounds don't really overlap, and you might be a tad limited. Shesh, I wish you had a choice between a 338 or 375 and your 416.
Can you tell I am a 416 fan?
send me an email, and I'll try to guess your vel's and send you a chart.

good hunting

You might want to check out if it is legal foryou to bring back your buddy's gun. He may not even be able to leave Africa with out it. At any rate you will not have the proper paperwork to get past US customs as the forms needed will all be in his name. Check this out carefully or your friend may be out of a rifle.

I'd leave the .416 barrel on and use it for everything! If you need to get closer, get closer! You won't be disappointed. Last year in Tanz I used a 300 ultra and a .416 Rigby. The Rigby did way way better IMHO-Rob
